Department Information

The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC) is a unit of the Division of Lifetime Learning at Georgia Tech. Since 1991, CEISMC has served as the primary connection point between Georgia Tech faculty and students and the preK-12 STEM education community.

CEISMC played a key role in achieving the vision set forth in the Commission on Creating the Next (CNE) report by reducing the barriers between preK-12 and higher education. By offering intensive, innovative professional development to practicing teachers, creating highly engaging in-school and extracurricular STEM experiences for K-12 students, and conducting research on effective STEM education practices, we strive to improve STEM teaching and learning in Georgia and improve the pipeline of students ready to excel in STEM fields.

Annually, CEISMC programs impact more than 62,000 students and 3,500 teachers in over 99 school districts throughout the state of Georgia. CEISMC achieves this through research, intensive teacher professional development, advancements in pedagogy, school and community outreach, and sustainable partnerships. The unit works closely with public and private stakeholders to expand the reach of the Institute's STEM education efforts in urban communities near Georgia Tech as well as those in rural school districts throughout the state of Georgia.

Job Summary

The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC) at the Georgia Institute of Technology invites applicants for Research Associate I position in Research and Evaluation. Applicants will be considered at single rank. The position requires prior experience in educational research as well as experience in interfacing with K-12 educational constituents. In particular, the position requires experience in educational program evaluation, specifically collecting and analyzing educational data and in analyzing issues related to K-12 STEM education policies, and strong experience in educational program management. Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to collection of qualitative and quantitative data, analysis, reporting and publishing.

Responsibilities

The Research Associate I will complete the following duties:

  • Assist the CEISMC lead evaluators with needed program evaluation duties: Monitor program milestones; set up meetings with stakeholders, develop tools for evaluation, tabulate results, collect data, maintain databases etc.
  • Conduct related literature reviews.
  • Collect qualitative and quantitative data for evaluation projects, including surveys, interviewing, field observations, focus groups.
  • Coordinate data collection efforts.
  • Maintain communication with evaluation data collectors on an ongoing basis to maintain data quality.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in social science, education, or related area

Preferred Qualifications

Master degree preferred, with emphasis on program evaluation, and policy implementation in STEM education, as well as strong project management skills. The position requires prior experience in educational research as well as experience in interfacing with K-12 educational constituents. In particular, the position requires experience in educational program evaluation, specifically collecting and analyzing educational data and in analyzing issues related to K-12 STEM education policies, and strong experience in educational program management.

  • Experience with qualitative research methods: instrument development.
  • Experience with survey research methods: questionnaire development/testing, survey administration/management.
  • Familiarity with educational research methods including mixed methodology, program evaluation.
  • Experience with GADOE data systems and their use in evaluation.
  • Experience evaluating STEM related K-12 activities/programs.
  • Experience working with K-12 students as well as adult learners.
  • Working knowledge of online survey creation tools.
  • Working knowledge of the RTOP observation instrument.
  • Experience publishing research and evaluation findings in presenting at conferences.
  • Experience preparing Institutional Review Board (IRB) applications.
  • A Masters degree in social science, education, or related field.
  • More than two years professional related experience.
  • Extremely detail-oriented in the management of several complex projects.
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel and SPSS.

Other Information

This position is full-time. Research Associates in CEISMC are dependent on sponsored research. All employment and assignments are ultimately contingent upon continued sponsored funding.
