Requirements
Research Technician, Department of Biology - Georgetown College - Georgetown University
In the Department of Biology in Georgetown College, laboratory design promotes meaningful and productive interactions, while numerous study spaces support innovative and collaborative education. This, combined with their strong ties to the research-oriented Georgetown Medical School, the NIH, and other universities in the DC area, provides an exceptional environment for learning and scholarship.
The Research Technician assists the research of Professor Ronda Rolfes, and provides data to support a grant application, as well as research expertise to the project. They interact with undergraduate and graduate students of the Rolfes research group, as well as with members of the research groups in the Reagents Hall Lab.
The Research Technician , reporting to Professor Rolfes, supports the research and teaching missions of the University in duties that include but are not limited to:
Experiments
Follows research protocols.
Maintains culture yeast (prepare media, grow them, use sterile techniques, etc.)
Performs molecular genetic experiments (PCR, CRISPR, DNA preparations, etc.).
Lab Maintenance
Maintains lab book and strain collection
Cleans and sterilizes glassware
Manages stocks of reagents chemicals, plastic consumables
Discussions
Reads and discusses scientific literature
Engages in scientific discussions
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science
At least 1 year of research experience
Experience working with the fungal organisms Candida albicans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli
Skills in microbiology (including preparation of growth media, ability to culture microbes, good sterile technique, use of an autoclave) and documentation
Skills in molecular genetics, including working with DNA (PCR, genomic DNA preparation, plasmid DNA preparation, restriction digestions) and using CRISPR technology in Candida.
Skilled in following research protocols and in documenting findings
Ability to analyze and present data using R, statistical methods, and Excel
Ability to manage reagents and consumables for the lab group (pipets, tips, chemicals, etc.).
Preferred qualifications
Knowledge of the inositol pyrophosphate metabolic pathway.
Ability to write scientific reports, read scientific papers, and present findings in group settings.
