Position Purpose
Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of the District’s structured cabling plants, analog/IP based multimedia, public address, sound systems, multimedia projectors, access control, video surveillance, analog/IP video systems as well as other systems that may connect to, or be associated with, the FWISD network infrastructure at 145 locations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Installs, maintains, and repairs structured data and voice cabling systems.
• Installs, maintains and repairs CAT 3, 5e, 6, and 6A structured data cabling systems within District facilities including aerial, under building, and underground installations.
• Troubleshoots, installs, maintains, and repairs analog and IP based video surveillance components.
• Retrofits, installs, repairs, and assesses video systems and access control.
• Documents and updates District cabling plants and as-built drawings.
• Installs Cable Support and Raceway Systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-hooks, bridle/D-rings, messenger wires, inner ducts, and associated hardware.
• Conducts testing using tone test set, volt-ohm meter, Fluke or related network testing equipment, and diagnoses open, shorted, crossed, split pairs, and active circuits.
• Constructs data closets (i.e., Mounts and installs backboards, cross connects, racks, patch panels, fiber optics and associated hardware per District and industry standards).
• Installs, maintains, and repairs analog/IP based multimedia projection and sound systems.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs digital signage solutions.
• Installs, maintains, and repairs analog/IP based Public Address systems.
• Assists network operations in maintaining and repairing analog, digital, and IP based telephony systems.
• Assists with physical installation, connection and maintenance of network switches, routers and wireless access points.
• Remains cognizant of current technology trends, and attends training required to maintain minimum Level I Copper Installer BICSI certification.
• Provides exceptional service to both internal and external customers.
• Works in a team-based environment, including teams from other departments.

• Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of layers 1-3 of the OSI Model, basic electronics, electrical and data closet design, various types of horizontal/vertical cabling and associated connectors.
• Knowledge of safety protocols, including District rules and regulations, OSHA, and Texas rules of the road.
• Skill in detecting and correcting issues related to orders received, purchase orders, work orders, and customer concerns.
• Skill in judgment and creativity in decision-making; considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

Travel Requirements

• Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards

• Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; tone test sets; volt-ohm meters, Fluke or related network testing equipment; climbs ladders, scaffolds, and lifts in excess of 18 feet tall.
• Posture: Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
• Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; reaching, climbing, crawling in confined spaces, walking.
• Lifting/Exerting: Constant lifting and/or exerting in excess of 20 pounds throughout the day; frequent exerting in excess of 50 pounds; occasional exerting in excess of 100 pounds.
• Environment: Works inside and outside; 75% indoors in controlled and partially controlled environment; 25% outdoors exposed to weather elements, noise, and limited exposure to fumes from soldering with lead; works in high exposed places and confined crawl spaces with possible exposure to electric shock; uses tone test set to hear and distinguish sounds/tones accurately; may require occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours.
• Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.
• Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

• Education: (See approved combinations of Education & Experience below)
• Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required;
• Associate’s degree from accredited college or university in a technical field preferred

• Certification/License:
• Clear and valid Texas Driver's License;
• BICSI Level I Copper Installers Certification prior to one year of employment (District will pay for hands-on training and up to two written exams).

• 2 years’ in structured cabling required;
• 2 years’ in IT preferred;
• IT experience includes experience working with layers 1-3 of the OSI Model, basic electronics, electrical and data closet design, as well as various types of horizontal/vertical cabling and associated connectors.
