    Summary: Provides instructional leadership to staff including: curriculum planning, review and implementation; and professional development. Responsible for day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of students, staff and activities. Ensures a safe, pleasant and effective educational atmosphere, provides discipline as necessary and enforces school policy.
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    The Board of Education, upon the recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools shall appoint all principals. If, at any time in the opinion of the majority of the board, the principal’s services are unsatisfactory, the principal shall be notified in writing and given an opportunity to correct the conditions, if the conditions are not corrected, the principal shall be given notice in writing at least three months before the expiration of the annual contract that their services will not be retrained. The term of the elementary principals is a 260 day contract.
    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
    • Supervises and collaborates with assistant principal, if assigned to site.
    • Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
    • Exercises leadership for the organization, administration, and supervision of all curricular and co-curricular programs of the school.
    • Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and fosters good interpersonal relations among students and staff.
    • Exerts leadership ensuring the effective implementation of the district-adopted curriculum, in partnership with Standards Based Instruction Department.
    • Establishes appropriate guidelines for proper student conduct and behavior.
    • Provides for the stimulating opportunities for the professional growth of the staff.
    • Evaluates and counsels all staff members regarding their individual performance and provides for effective recorded evaluation reports of certified staff according to district adopted procedures.
    • Exercises significant leadership in achieving district adopted goals for the current school year.
    • Assumes responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board Policies and Regulations by the school=s staff and students.
    • Develops appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, and safety of the children assigned to the school.
    • Coordinates and supervises the counseling and testing services within the building and coordinates activities which provide for the continual assessment and interpretation of pupil growth.
    • Develop effective procedures for the classification and scheduling of students within established guidelines.
    • Effectively utilizes the resources of the school system and the community in developing the most effective educational program.
    • Develops and maintains a good program of public relations in order to further the community=s understanding and support of the educational program of the school.
    • Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and the like.
    • Requisitions, in a prudent manner, supplies and equipment necessary for the operation of the school programs and makes recommendations for building alterations as appropriate.
    • Maintains a good relationship with the school PTA organization and cooperates in the programs sponsored by PTA groups.
    • Directs school support staff in performing their duties within the building.
    • Provides for the supervision of playgrounds, lunchrooms, and hallways, etc. in the best interest of all concerned.
    • Conducts fire and other emergency drills in accordance with state and local regulations.
    • Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, assigning, and training of school staff.
    • Recommends the removal of a teacher whose work is unsatisfactory and who has not responded to an established program for improvement.
    • Works effectively with members of the district administration staff on school activities such as transportation, special education, food service and the like.
    • Prepare or supervises the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paper work required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
    • Submits to the District Office all financial activity requests, properly coded according to district policy, along with necessary information to warrant disbursements of school funds.
    • Keeps the District Office informed of the school’s activities and problems.
    • Performs special assignments and other duties as determined by the Superintendent.
    • Participate in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district.
    • Service as the building LEA for 504’s and Special Education meetings, unless a designee is assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • Master’s degree with a graduate major in education.
    • Holds a North Dakota Elementary Principal’s Credential.
    • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience.
    • Minimum of two years of successful administrative experience.
    • Knowledge of instructional leadership, organization development and management, instructional skills, knowledge base in curriculum and instruction.
    • Experience developing and managing financial budgets and resources.
    • Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments and decisions.
    • Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in an atmosphere of multiple and conflicting demands.
    • Demonstrated ability of strategies for the implementation of technology in the delivery of instruction to effectively supervise and evaluate professional staff.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Demonstrated understanding and ability to facilitate the use of appropriate community resources in meeting the needs of students and families.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic communities.
    • Knowledge of the principles of site-based shared decision-making and demonstrated ability to facilitate a collaborative team atmosphere.
    • Demonstrated knowledge in current research in organizational development in the educational setting and characteristics of effective leadership.
