FREE currently has an exceptional opportunity for a Community Resource Specialist to spend the day in the community helping people facing adversities, provide training in independent living skills as well as assisting neighbors to be responsible tenants and maintain psychiatric stability.

Stop in Monday- Friday between 11am-3pm at either of the following locations:

Suffolk County

F.R.E.E., 405 Locust Avenue, Oakdale (just off Sunrise Highway)

Nassau County

F.R.E.E. 191 Bethpage Sweet Hollow Road, Old Bethpage (just off Route 110)

This is an exciting role which allows you to help community members who are facing:

  • Mental health issues
  • Substance abuse issues
  • Previously or currently homeless
  • Transitioning from Incarceration

Specifically, you will:

  • Work with the people we support to help them identify and realize their personal life goals
  • Teach individuals who to contact for emergencies including, medical, psychiatric, fire, lack of food, etc.
  • Assist individuals in utilizing community/neighborhood services.
  • Act as a liaison between individuals, landlords, and various treatment team members.
  • Teach independent living skills such as: apartment maintenance, socialization skills, budgeting, self-medication, personal care, travel training, shopping, cooking, and returning to school or the work force.
  • Develop Individualized Support Plans in conjunction with individuals and treatment teams: housing stability, medication management, employment and vocational training, mental health treatment services, drug and alcohol assessment and referral for community-based services.
  • Encourage and support individuals to maintain psychiatric stability through counseling, crisis intervention, attending a daytime activity, participating in treatment, and utilizing other available resources.
  • Work with Health Home to ensure coordination of all services (Psychiatric & Physical)
  • Assist individuals in complying with mandated treatment, such as AOT order specifications, and legal mandates, such as parole or probation.

We require:

  • Associate Degree in a Human Services field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred

o Two full years of experience supporting mental health population may substitute for Associate Degree requirement

  • Experience working with individuals diagnosed with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders preferred
  • Valid NYS driver’s license and satisfy criteria to be a driver for FREE
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with flexibility, keeping others informed and anticipating needs is essential
  • A professional who is efficient, well organized, and have excellent communication skills
