About Families in Action for Quality Education (FIA Oakland)

The Families in Action for Quality Education coalition (FIA Oakland) unites 45 district and charter school communities representing 16,500 students to build leadership, influence and political power to reposition families and youth as influential school and city-wide leaders. FIA’s 500 parent and youth leaders lead campaigns in their schools and city to champion quality education, ensuring that underserved families disrupt inequities at the school and systems level and achieve policy and practice wins. In partnership with Energy Convertors, Great School Voices and its school partners, FIA has become a force to be reckoned with in Oakland education.

Operations Manager

Our Organization

The Families in Action for Quality Education coalition (FIA Oakland) unites 40 district and charter school communities representing 16,500 students to build leadership, influence and political power to reposition families, youth and stakeholders as influential school and city-wide leaders. In addition to power building, FIA has a robust and creative approach to new media, hosting podcasts, awards shows and digital media that amplifies our mission. Since 2019 FIA has trained over 500 parent and youth leaders who lead impactful campaigns at the school and city level to advance policy and practice changes. FIA has become a force to be reckoned with in Oakland public education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Campaign Operations Management: You will oversee project management in operations, meeting project goals, hiring vendors, and managing timelines. Plan, monitor, and analyze key metrics for day-to-day operations to ensure efficient and timely completion of tasks. You will collaborate with communications and organizing teams to ensure operations of our campaigns are seamless, and conduct weekly data entry and reports.
  • Team Tools: In this area of responsibility, you will manage our data systems like Murmuration and Quorum, manage the implementation of project management tools, and eventually train new staff on our operations tools like Google Workspace and Monday.com.
  • General Operations: You will have the chance to support our board of directors by managing communications, scheduling, meeting logistics, and taking minutes at meetings. You will also maintain accurate records and provide regular reports on operations-related activities.
  • Finance: In this area, you will create and manage contracts, vendors, and agreements. You’ll also monitor campaign budgets and operational goals, process invoices and monitor payments for vendors and contractors. Finally, you will ensure documents like ACH forms and W-9s are completed and filed.
  • Other: Perform other duties as required to support the work of colleagues and the organizations’ mission as a whole.

About the Role

This is a full-time position. FIA uses a hybrid model in our organization, meaning we have 3 in office work days and 2 remote work days per week, in addition to some in-person and virtual evening meetings.

Compensation, Benefits and Professional Development

We offer a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package including health care and an employer-matched 401K retirement plan. Annual compensation range is from $60k - 80k and is dependent on the candidate’s experience and demonstrated impact.

Your Qualifications

Required:

  • Passion for Our Mission: We are unapologetically about increasing access, quality and equity in Oakland public education for underserved families.
  • Experienced Leader: At least 4 years of professional experience.
  • Gets Things Done. Demonstrated experience accomplishing important goals, and can play the roles of individual contributor on our small team as well as managing and directing the work of others and delegating effectively.
  • Effective Project Manager & Logistics Leader: You enjoy creating, implementing and streamlining multiple projects and systems into a seamless operation. When facing a complex issue or project, instinct is to break it down into manageable pieces to determine the most efficient solution -- and then prioritize against competing project needs in order to execute effectively and drive results. You identify potential pitfalls in a project and finds a way to avoid or fix them.
  • Flexible and Collaborative: You are comfortable in the environment of a small team working in a dynamic political and advocacy space where resourcefulness, persistence, and patience are particularly required. You have the flexibility to adjust to external political demands, evolving priorities, and procedures. You have a willingness to work as collaborative member and contribute to a team in a dynamic, learning-oriented environment.
  • Culturally Competent. Thinks and speaks about issues of race, class, gender, and other forms of identity thoughtfully and with compassion.
  • System Builder: You embrace and enjoy metrics, goals, and creating the systems/structures that allow you to meet them. You are savvy with spreadsheets and other technological tools. You are a fast learner and adopter of other systems and technical tools that create efficiencies for your work. You enjoy optimizing your work and making others around you more effective.
  • Unusually Organized: You often get compliments on how organized you are at work and in your personal life. You have battle-tested organizational systems that you’re ready to implement but you are constantly learning and communicating to seek ways to improve.
  • Driver License and Eligibility to Work: A valid driver's license and reliable, insured vehicle (needed to fulfill job requirements) and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

Preferred:

  • Oakland Education Experience: experience working in the Oakland education ecosystem is preferred but not required.
  • Financial Experience: experience working with financial operations in a previous role is preferable for this role but not a requirement.
  • Experience in Multiracial, Multilingual Communities: the ideal candidate will have shared life experiences and/or identities with the families we work with in Oakland and/or experience working in African American, Latinx communities and/or multiracial, multilingual communities.
  • Technical Expertise: experience working with our tools is a nice-to-have but not required. Currently, these include Murmuration, Quorum, Monday.com, and Google Workspace.
  • Proficiency in Spanish: is desirable but not required.
