Description

Summary

The managing editor of resources and curriculum provides skilled copyediting and proofreading for internal client-led projects as initiated by our Mission Priority and other Mission Support teams including their submissions for the weekly CovChurch Now newsletter. This person is well-versed in the Covenant style guide, detail-oriented and able to effectively manage their workflow to keep projects moving to a timely completion. This position works closely with the editorial direction to review and edit content for various mediums. This position is located in Chicago. 

Essential Functions

Function as production editor of CovChurch Now weekly email newsletter, compiling and editing weekly content submissions to be handed off to digital team for execution of newsletter.

Provide editorial guidance and oversight of campaigns, curricula, and other projects in cooperation with the Editorial Director.· Collaborate with design team in providing editorial review/proofreading of resources and curriculum for our mission priority and mission support teams. 

 Oversee workflow related to translation of resources from engaging to paying freelance writers and editors.

Assist in ensuring that resources and websites are factual, grammatically accurate, and consistent in style and tone.

Coordinate related content posted on social media outlets in collaboration with the Digital team. 

Process inquiries from constituency; respond and/or direct to the appropriate person according to need. 

Model and ensure editorial efforts maintain high journalistic and ethical standards, offering fair, objective, and balanced perspectives, accurate and complete content, and respecting the proprieties of copyrights and permissions as well as the rules governing plagiarism and attribution.

 Other duties as assigned by Editorial Director and Executive Director of Marketing Communications.

Requirements

Education and Experience 

Requirements: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or a related field; general knowledge of the Bible and evangelical Christianity (familiarity with the Evangelical Covenant Church a plus); judgment and critical thinking skills in evaluating potential stories; strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with others. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and WordPress; familiarity with basic HTML is a plus. Able to type, accurately 55 wpm.

· Strong writing and editing skills.

· Detail oriented, strong organization, prioritization and time-management skills are essential. 

· Works well under pressure and is able to accomplish multiple tasks, with conflicting priorities and timelines. Ability to track and report progress on a wide range of tasks, simultaneously. 

· Ability to respond to and deal with a range of ad hoc queries/requests.

· Writes clearly and informatively; edits work for spelling and grammar; varies writing style to meet needs; presents numerical data effectively; able to read and interpret written information.

· Ability to operate with discretion and, at times, confidentiality. 

· Communicates with others to convey information effectively and efficiently. Responds appropriately and adjusts actions in relation to others. 

· Self-starter, with the ability to work independently.

· Bilingual English/Spanish speaking is a plus.

Environment Conditions

Able to work well in professional office setting, but occasionally works in remote locales. Occasional travel. Must be versatile and able to work for prolonged segments sitting or standing. Must engage frequently with office tools and equipment, such as: computer, copier, phone, web-conferencing equipment, cell communication, printers, etc. Must be able to occasionally lift or move items, less than 35 lbs. Occasionally, pack and unpack, move and lift boxes that contain event materials.
