Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island is Hiring a Controller Near Providence, RI

Controller Position Available

Posting Date: March 2024

The Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island – a welcoming, faith-based organization headquartered in Providence – is seeking a full-time, hands-on Controller to manage its internal and external financial reporting and general accounting operations.

Responsibilities include:

· Maintaining the accounting system and financial books of record for the Diocese, whose financial size is approximately $50 million in assets with a $5 million operating budget

· Processing accounts payable and receivable and preparing related checks and deposits

· Staffing monthly meetings of the volunteer Commission on Finance

· Supporting operations of the Diocesan Investment Trust and the use of endowment accounts within applicable restrictions

· Coordinating payroll, benefits, and insurance programs’ management with outside service providers

· Generating reliable monthly budget-to-actual reports for leaders’ decision-making, annual financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles for audit purposes, and required annual financial reports to the national church

· Maintaining good lines of communication with church clergy, bookkeepers, and volunteer treasurers

This position reports to the chief financial officer and is presently supported by a part-time bookkeeper and board-level treasurer.

Required qualifications include: Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for nonprofit organizations acquired through education and/or experience (CPA preferred); 5 years of relevant experience in nonprofit accounting including bookkeeping procedures and internal controls; and a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred). Other preferences include direct experience with audits, endowments, investments, and church administration.

Salary negotiable, starting at $80,000 plus benefits. Candidates will ultimately be required to submit a list of references and, if offered the position, undergo a background check.
