Job Description:
Job Title: Academic Counselor
Reports To: Manager, Admin Services FLSA
Salary Range: $52,000 - $58,240 
Schedule: Monday - Thursday (9 hrs) Every other Friday (9 hrs)
Site: Compton, CA (In Person)
Status: Non-Exempt
About The Position: EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services seeks to hire a full-­time Academic Counselor to support young people primarily in the YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) high school diploma program co-located at EntreNous. The Academic Counselor is experienced with high school and/or alternative education to provide intensive support for young people ages 16 . The successful candidate has strong critical thinking skills in completing administrative tasks regarding class schedules, transcript planning, data entry, implementing enrollment processes for programs, and documented experience working in intervention programs for at-risk youth. In addition, the AC initiates member contact to ensure member success within the program; counsels on attendance and other issues; develops and implements recruitment and retention strategies; and ultimately supports the front desk.

About Our Programs: EntreNous serves young people primarily ages 16-29 who have been pushed or have dropped out of traditional education. Through a variety of services, program members developed needed skills to create sustainable wage positions for themselves, primarily in Construction | Building Trades and Hospitality | Culinary Arts. Areas of focus include: Career Development, Counseling, Civic Engagement | Leadership, Education (Accredited High School Diploma), and Workforce Development (Construction | Culinary). We are a full-time, project-based program focused on social justice and restorative practices that allows young people to develop the skills needed to rebuild their communities and their lives.
Essential Functions:
  • Greets and assists anyone entering the building.
  • Review academic progress with members to ensure all program requirements are met.
  • Implement technical services to support and facilitate the enrollment process.
  • Requests and enters official transcripts into the program database.
  • Update database with new enrollment/emergency form information for each member; register new members as needed.
  • Assist members with attendance needs, signing in, tardy slips, and absence forms.
  • Facilitate the process of collaboratively creating site course matrices each trimester.
  • Scheduling and creating classes based on member needs and course availability.
  • Adjust member class schedules as needed.
  • Enter grades into School Pathways and work with teachers to ensure completion.
  • Submit required paperwork according to specified timelines.
  • Provide up-to-date enrollment figures for registration, collect registration fees.
  • Oversee and finalize the graduation check for exiting seniors.
  • Provide support for recruitment and retention of members to ensure daily attendance numbers are met.
  • Review and make necessary grade level changes as determined by current YCSC guidelines.
  • Works collaboratively with YCSC faculty and administration to develop strategies for keeping struggling members in class.
  • Works collaboratively with other departments to facilitate and address member and program needs.
  • Manages front desk operations on a day-to-day basis.
  • Facilitate and/or participate in orientation and recruitment meetings as well as Mental Toughness Orientation.
  • Submits and documents Independent Studies master agreements into the program database.
  • Maintains statistical information and summary information in reports as needed.
  • Participates in staff-development workshops and activities, as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • 3 years of full-time paid work experience in a nonprofit setting preferred.
  • Minimum of an associates degree required, Bachelor’s degree preferred, School Counseling experience required.
  • Substantial and significant use of computerized management information systems and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Suite, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written (English) communication skills with demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with participants, staff, management, and community partners.
  • Sensitivity to individuals of various socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Must be motivated to learn, a self-starter, trainable, and an excellent role model.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Professional demeanor and a positive attitude that associates with the agency culture.
  • Driver’s License, reliable transportation, adequate insurance, and good driving record required (DMV printout); Pass Criminal Background Check; CPR/First Aid Certified (preferred), CA Mandated Reporter (preferred).
  • TB Test (last 4 years).
  • Covid vaccination records required.
  • Bilingual preferred, Spanish.
In the first week, expect to: 
  • Onboard and integrate into EntreNous Youth Empowerment Services.
  • Meet the team, attend meetings, observe the organization, and learn the mission, vision, and values.
  • Familiarization with our internal processes and tools. 
In the first month, expect to: 
  • Spend time with the organization’s executive directors and team members to understand the priorities and culture of the organization including the philosophy and YouthBuild model. 
  • Review all internal and external documents, websites, and guidelines.
  • Understand and begin to develop a strategy and plan for increasing knowledge and tasks for the role.
In the first three months, expect to: 
  • Have a solid understanding of the role, the program, the delivery of content.
  • Participate in strategic planning and continuous quality improvement.
  • Streamline systems and structures to improve efficiency and ease of use.
In the first six months, expect to: 
  • Share ideas for new processes| program elements.
  • Refine and assist with innovating existing procedures for recruitment and retention.
  • Begin setting personal and professional goals.
