THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Senior Accountant position is a critical component of the Finance team, executing all aspects of the accounting operations, in support of the program, development and executive functions. This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate to help elevate the accounting infrastructure of a dynamic and rapidly-growing nonprofit as it continues to grow its positive impact on the community. This role involves a high level of expertise in accounting principles, financial analysis, and reporting. The Senior Accounting position plays a crucial role in ensuring accurate financial records, compliance with regulations, and providing financial insights to support decision-making.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Reporting:

• Prepare and analyze financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
• Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) as applicable.
• Produce timely and accurate financial reports for management, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.

Financial Analysis:

• Conduct in-depth financial analysis to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
• Provide insights and recommendations based on financial data to support strategic decision-making.
• Assist in budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning.

General Ledger Management: 

• Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all financial transactions.
• Prepare journal entries, adjusting entries, and accruals as needed.
• Monitor and review accounts payable and accounts receivable processes.

Tax Compliance:

• Prepare and file tax returns, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws.
• Stay up-to-date with tax regulations and advise on tax-saving opportunities.
• Assist with tax audits and respond to tax-related inquiries.

Financial Controls and Audits:

• Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure compliance with financial policies and procedures.
• Conduct internal audits to identify areas for improvement and risk mitigation.
• Ensure timely and unqualified annual audit and 990 reports by adhering to organizational accounting policies and procedures throughout the year.

Financial Software and Tools:

• Utilize accounting software and tools to streamline financial processes and reporting.
• Train and assist staff in using financial software effectively.

Team Leadership and Collaboration:

• :Mentor and guide junior staff, providing support and training.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including finance, operations, and external auditors, to achieve financial objectives.

Compliance and Regulation:

• Ensure compliance with all relevant accounting standards, laws, and regulations.
• Stay informed about changes in accounting regulations and adapt accounting practices accordingly.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and at least three years of accounting experience required, with a proven track record of increasing responsibility. CPA or equivalent certification. Preference for candidates with nonprofit multi-fund accounting experience, appropriate knowledge of tax laws and related issues and regulations for 501(C)(3) organizations, including federal and state filings and sound internal controls. Experience with single audits, previously known as the OMB Circular A-133 audit.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• The position requires a highly organized and detail-oriented person with excellent computer skills, who is able to manage many tasks and projects at once.
• Must have excellent customer service, interpersonal and oral/written communication skills and professional demeanor. 
• Knowledge of basic accounting principles, including the ability to manage complex expense allocations. 
• High degree of accuracy in financial data recording, analysis, and reporting. 
• Demonstrated ability to accurately calculate, post, correct, and manage accounting figures and financial records. 
• Ability and willingness to contribute to the high functioning of the administrative team. 
• Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization and execution skills. 
• Ability to use tack and diplomacy appropriate to situation. 
• Must conduct business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, cooperative, sensitive, respectful and kind when dealing with clients, visitors, the public and all colleagues. 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

• Must be proficient in Quickbooks. There will be an evaluation to determine proficiency.
• Microsoft Office: Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Adobe.
• Electronic mail software — Email software; Microsoft Exchange.

MEDICAL SCREENING:

• Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.
• Must submit verification of completion of the following current health screenings:
  • Influenza immunization
  • Tuberculin Skin Test (TB) within the past 12 months
  • HBV immunization

STANDARD HOURS: 8am – 5pm.

SALARY RANGE: Salary is contingent upon available funding, and is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

JOB LOCATION: The position is based in the Atlanta metropolitan area and requires the employee to work at the Empowerment Resource Center office.
