SUNY Empire State College is seeking a Junior Accountant to provide support for the Accounting Department. The candidate must demonstrate analytical and time management skills. Attention to detail and the ability meet deadlines is a must. The Junior Accountant (State Title: Staff Assistant) will be responsible for the reconciliation of accounts including the State Revenue/Collection Account. In addition, the selected incumbent will be responsible for performing detailed reconciliation of the daily reports generated from the Student Accounts system against the general ledger and bank account reports. These reconciliations are performed in such a way that discrepancies are identified and rectified in a timely fashion and to ensure that cash collections on campus are appropriately posted and accounted for.

Job Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Identify incoming wires and ACH credits to the revenue account for entry by student accounts.
  • Perform data analytics and reconciliations to ensure data accuracy and consistency within and between applications, including the reconciliation of the general ledger and the daily cashiering reports from student accounts.
  • General Ledger adjusting entries for the cash accounts to be posted in a reasonable time, to ensure trial balances are kept current. All entries are to be documented consistently and in a uniform manner.
  • Any checks or ACH entries returned by the bank (NSF) are to be distributed on a daily basis to the Student Accounts Office.
  • Reconcile Outstanding Checks on a monthly basis and maintain a list of all outstanding checks.
  • Reconcile Financial Aid programs including Tap, Pell, Direct Lending, SUSTA, and SEOG.
  • Isolate, identify and research discrepancies and correct in a timely fashion.
  • Any miscellaneous debits and credits to the bank account will be identified and reconciled/entered into the General Ledger and included in the end of month trial balances.
  • Processing of non-student receipts.
  • Perform monthly routine reconciliation of the State Revenue account in a timely manner, no later than the last day of the following month. Assist with bi-weekly and quarterly preparation of the Trial Balance and reporting to SUNY.
  • Assist in the development, testing, and maintenance of payment processing and related systems.
  • Processing of allocation, expenditure, revenue, contra revenue, and revenue/expense journals including institutional scholarships.
  • Process journal transfers with SUNY and other State Agencies.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
Job Requirements:


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and two (2) or more years of progressively increasing responsibility in finance or budgeting OR a minimum of ten (10) years of relevant experience.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to present information in a clear and concise format.
  • Organizational and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and working with financial data.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities and be able to work cross functionally with their colleagues across the campus.
  • Accounting and information technology skills, including Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience working in higher education.
  • Experience working at or with SUNY.
  • Experience utilizing Ellucian Banner or other ERP university system.
  • Experience with effectively facilitating teams comprised of internal and external stakeholders.

  • This position is located in Saratoga Springs, NY.

  • Part-time telecommuting option may be available for this position per the SUNY Telecommuting Policy which has been extended to June 30, 2023.
