General Summary: The Milieu Safety Assistant ensures a safe and therapeutic environment for patients in all clinical areas. The MSA works under the direction of the Milieu Safety Supervisor and in conjunction with all clinical staff. The MSA ensures that LifeCare Hospital’s philosophy, standards, policies and procedures are met and maintained in a professional manner. The MSA is actively involved in clinical activities to ensure individualized, patient-centered health care for all the behavioral health patients admitted to LifeCare Behavior Health Hospital.
Patient Population: Has contact with patients in a clinical setting; understands and demonstrates appropriate behavior when interacting with patients in the adult (18-65 years of age) and geriatric (65 and older) populations.
Essential Functions
- Actively maintains a safe and therapeutic clinical environment.
- Ensures patient safety at all times by conducting unit safety rounds and patient observation checks.
- Serves as a front-line responder in crisis situations, engaging in verbal de-escalation techniques, restraints, and seclusion events.
- Works in collaboration with all clinical departments to maintain the milieu.
- Provides supplemental patient groups and activities as directed.
- Performs initial safety screening of new admissions and visitors.
- Ensures patient safety at all times by notifying nursing and/or administration of any identified risk factors or potential needs for intervention.
- Plans/organizes work for assigned shift to properly utilize time, resources and supplies to ensure patient receives appropriate quality care.
- The knowledge and skills necessary to perform the position requirements are demonstrated through the successful completion of competencies established for the position, to include population served, and other special needs of patients or customers served by the department.
- Adheres to LCBHH policies, procedures, all safety plans, and all standards imposed by regulatory organizations.
- Regular attendance and timeliness is required.
Requirements
Experience: Minimum of one-year experience in a behavioral health setting, crisis intervention, de-escalation, or related field required. Experience as safety officer, mental health assistant, or therapeutic support staff preferred.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in psychology, criminal justice, or related field preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Current BLS certification and Crisis Prevention Intervention Certification is required. Must maintain current BLS certification and Crisis Intervention Training while employed with LifeCare Hospitals.
