East Bay Medical Group is Hiring a Palliative Care Physician Near Oakland, CA

  • The East Bay Medical Group is seeking a Palliative Care Provider [WR1] in the Department of Medicine at Alameda Health System (AHS). AHS is an integrated public health system that spans 5 facilities and 4 ambulatory sites, with 800 beds providing primary, specialty, and Level 1 Trauma care to the residents of Alameda County.     As a Palliative Care Specialist, you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to a critical service to support and enhance serious ill care programs to transform how people experience the end of life in the communities they call home. If you are a compassionate physician eager to practice palliative care in an interdisciplinary, collaborative, supportive setting providing healthcare services for vulnerable populations, you will be at home at AHS.

    Alameda Health System is one of 7 local hospital systems to be awarded over 2 million dollars from the Stupski Foundation to support and enhance serious illness care programs to transform how people experience the end of life in the communities they call home. East Bay Medical Group is recruiting a grant-funded Physician position with full benefits to help build upon the expansion of the palliative care service to San Leandro and Alameda Hospitals. This position has the potential to become a 1.0 FTE in year 2.

    This position is within the Department of Medicine, integral to AHS’s clinical mission to provide high-value care for the underserved community of Alameda County. The Department of Medicine has approximately 65 full time faculty members. Our Department culture is notable for its camaraderie, resilient mindset, and its commitment to mission.

    East Bay Medical Group is a multispecialty entity that supports the majority of physicians who staff Alameda Health System. We recently formed in July 2020 from two prior medical groups, producing a practitioner base that spans from new residency graduates to tenured master clinicians who have been at AHS for more than 30 years.     Position Highlights

    · The Palliative Care Specialist is responsible for the expert provision of safe, efficient, patient-centered, and cost-effective care within the Hospital.

    · The clinical role of the Palliative Care Specialist is to provide inpatient care predominantly in settings in the community hospital acute care and intensive care units and overall manage and coordinate patient care throughout treatment while patients are hospitalized.

    · Provides coverage of the Palliative Care Consult service including providing consultations with house staff, AHS medical staff, nursing staff and social work staff requesting Palliative Care consults in a variety of care settings.

    • Participates with and periodically lead a multidisciplinary Palliative Care Consult team providing care to patients and families. The team includes full time Social Workers, part time Chaplains, APP’s, and Medicine Residents.
    • Participates in patient and family meetings to discuss goals of care, shared decision making or to help resolve conflicts in decision making, review benefits and burdens of treatment options, and facilitate ethics consults as needed
    • Assists ward teams in assessing, controlling, and documenting distressing physical and emotional symptoms in patients with advanced illness in accordance with best practices
    • In collaboration with other Palliative Care Consult team members, provides ongoing information and advocacy to AHS and AHS staff on how and when to access and utilize Palliative Care services
    • Takes lead role in supporting development of palliative care service at each community hospital, including efforts to engage stakeholders, co-educate and train palliative champions, collect and analyze data, advocate for future planning in budget, administrative, and operational conversations.
