DPH-Shattuck Hospital is Hiring a Clinical Social Worker (C) Near Boston, MA

The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is seeking a Clinical Social Worker (C) to provide direct clinical and consultative services to the complex community medical population as well as Department of Correction (DOC) inmate patient population in accordance with the policies and procedures of Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH), and Department of Correction (DOC) and Department of Public Health (DPH). Assess client’s mental health, social, legal, and environmental deficits and be responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of an individualized client treatment plan.

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8-4:30PM with Saturday and Sunday Off

Please note, the nature of this job requires the incumbent to occasionally work flexible hours outside of the designated shift.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
  • Primary Clinician for an assigned caseload of community and/or HOC inmate medically complex inpatients throughout their hospitalization.
  • Provides timely and accurate diagnostic psychosocial assessments according to LSH and The Joint Commission standards.
  • Develop and coordinate disposition plans in conjunction with community patient, their supports, and treatment team, considering developmental, racial, cultural, and ethnic, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity issues that impact the patient’s aftercare needs.
  • Provide time-sensitive crisis intervention, suicide screening, and psychotherapeutic services to community and inmate patient populations.
  • Completes timely & accurate documentation in the electronic medical record according to LSH, DOC, and TJC standards and policies.
  • Gathers and utilizes clinical data to aid in the development of the ongoing psychosocial assessment and discharge planning process.
  • Clinical documentation includes but is not limited to initial psychosocial diagnostic evaluations, patient contacts, response to treatment, discharge planning, guardianship affidavits, crisis interventions.
  • Provides consultation and education to patients and their supports as appropriate to enhance patient’s discharge.
  • Serves as liaison between LSH and other public and private agencies and collaborates with community providers in the continuum of care as per TJC standards regarding guardianships, legal status, entitlements.
  • Collaborate with LSH Treatment Team/DOC/HOC regarding HOC inmate patients on mental health or security watches and/or 15-minute checks when there is a danger to self or others.
  • Actively participates in regularly scheduled Rounds, Team meetings, case conferences, and department meetings.
  • Participates in Social Work Addiction Department Performance Improvement activities.
  • Continuously assesses and evaluates patient progress and revises treatment plan accordingly.
  • Assumes responsibility for own continuing education and professional growth of others.
  • Contributes to the enhancement of the therapeutic milieu by active participation on committees and activities by providing both formal and informal teaching/training programs, including but not limited to new psychotherapy techniques, special interventions and clinical management
Required Qualifications:
  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrated ability in psychotherapy techniques: including diagnostic assessment and crisis interventions, individual, family and group work therapy.
  • Knowledge of the social, emotional, and experiential causes of social and psychiatric disorders.
  • Knowledge of addiction, chronic illnesses, disabilities, and/or end-of life care.
  • Knowledge of community resources and how to access them for patient aftercare and discharge planning with the ability to initiate discharge planning upon admission.
  • Develop and implement effective clinical interventions with a clinically complex, neurological, and physically challenging patient population.
  • Interpret and coordinate treatment plans among a variety of human service personnel and delivery systems.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with others, and to establish rapport and interact with people who are under stress and to handle stressful and emergent situations.
  • Utilize supervision effectively, i.e., the capacity for self-examination with specific reference to how one’s own behavior impacts upon patients and colleagues.
  • Can teach clinical social work methods and techniques to social workers and students and communicate the principles to other personnel.
  • Understand, explain, and apply the provisions of the laws, rules regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Exercises discretion in handling confidential information in compliance with hospital standards and HIPPA regulations
  • Can communicate efficiently both verbally and in writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experienced in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams programs.
  • Prior experience in a multidisciplinary health care setting

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.

Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients. The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
REQUIRED WORK EXPERIENCE:
At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience as a clinical social worker after earning a Master's degree in social work.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
  • A Doctorate in social work, psychology, sociology, counseling, counseling education, or human services may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.
  • One year of education equals 30 semester hours. Education toward a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION:
A Master's or higher degree in social work is required.
LICENSES:
  • Licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Worker or Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Social Work is required.
  • Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.
