Superintendent Job Description
The Superintendent role is a senior management, leadership position where the Superintendent experience, knowledge and understanding of DirtWorks services is leveraged across multiple engagements to ensure high standards of quality, execution excellence and customer satisfaction are met. The Superintendent oversees the operations of multiple projects and job sites, from planning through completion. The Superintendent will be tasked with translating requirements, work order instructions and contract specifications into actionable tasks which are built into bids, quotes and project documentation used by DirtWorks team members in the field. There are few finance related tasks, but the Superintendent will help to manage labor, equipment, and material costs to maximize utilization and ensure compliance with contracted statements of work and Managed Service Agreement (MSA). The Superintendent will work in conjunction with the logistics coordinator with scheduling site visits, resource planning for future jobs, scheduling equipment needed for jobs and assisting with the logistics involved in equipment mobilization/demobilization and permitting. Site visits may involve meeting with clients and partners to collaborate on work progress and performance. Superintendent may work with Foreman and Project Managers on the job site to participate in kick-off meetings or job starts where a senior management representative can provide value.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Superintendents will be responsible for multiple projects and act as the lead and point of contact for Foremen of those assigned projects. Superintendent will provide engineering and design support between COO, PMs, and the estimation team in the development of scope of work planning
  • Superintendents will maintain oversight in the assessments of proposed new work – visiting proposed new sites to gather data needed to support the quote process
  • Superintendents will assist in developing execution methods and plans that build out the resource, equipment. and materials cost estimates
  • Superintendents will monitor scope of each project and progress under their supervision through communication with Foreman, PM and LC including site visits
  • Superintendents will act as the company liaison between customers and DirtWorks staff when needed
  • Superintendents will advise Foremen and team members on execution methods, processes and procedures relating to work to be done and the successful completion of projects
  • Superintendents will also review safety or special instructions that need to be given to crews as advised and work with the Safety Coordinator to assure safety compliance is upheld
  • Superintendents will also act as coaches and mentors to Foreman and other crew members to support team member development and growth within the company
  • Superintendents will help in the assessment of all team members to identify opportunities for training, knowledge transfer and support
  • Required to evaluate direct reports and crews while providing necessary feedback toward ongoing performance management
  • Directly responsible for holding Foreman and their crews accountable
Requirements
  • Minimum (3) years as a Foreman or previous management work experience in related fields, utility pipeline is mandatory
  • Must be highly effective communicator, motivator and mentor to colleagues, subordinates, and supervisors
  • Must have knowledge of software applications such as spreadsheets, schedules, and database management
  • Must have good discretion, good judgement, initiative, and the ability to work independently within established guidelines
  • Must have and maintain thorough understanding of company policies and procedures
  • Must have strong knowledge of project requirements such as interpretation of scope documents, blueprints, permits, schedules, provisions, bid documents, restrictions, and materials
  • Must possess the ability to initiate and/or perform necessary steps toward the kickoff process of a project such as pre-scouting, thorough reviews of roads built and access pre-bid meetings, heavy haul permits, creating a construction schedule based on outage schedules, permitting holds, provisions, and scope clarification
  • Ability to schedule and source necessary equipment, material, and manpower per bid specifications to begin and maintain ongoing projects
  • Required to verify accuracy of direct report paperwork and data entry associated with daily project tracking, equipment, payable timesheets, equipment damages and vehicle check sheets
  • Mandatory ability to report to respective project managers on regular intervals, including but not limited to project progress, emergent risks or issues, construction delays or adjustments, in-service date changes and review of Schedule vs. Budget
  • Must be willing to travel within a multi-state area
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and be insurable
  • Must pass a pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Must pass an acceptable background check
  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds
  • Must be experienced in heavy equipment operation (excavator, backhoe, bulldozer, tracked carriers, etc.)
  • Strong ability to recognize change of scope requests and initiate proper documentation associated with change orders. As well as direct the Foreman with any adjustments to task and material tracking associated with c/o requests and execution
