Location(s): Watsonville Headquarters Office; After the first 90 days of employment, the position is eligible for a Hybrid work schedule. Candidates further than 40 miles from Watsonville may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule earlier than the first 90 days of employment.

 

JOB OVERVIEW:

Digital NEST is a workforce development center that has welcomed hundreds of youth from working-class, farmworker communities to develop the technical and professional skills they need to achieve their dreams. It is an exciting time for the NEST as we are on the precipice of expanding to a total of five communities across Northern California by the end of 2026. Digital NEST has centers in the heart of Watsonville, Salinas, Gilroy, Stockton and Modesto. The first Digital NEST in the Central Valley is expected to launch in Stockton in 2023, with plans to scale across the Bay Area and San Joaquin Valley also underway.

The Director of Development is a key member of Digital NEST’s development team. In partnership with the CDO, this position is responsible to create, implement and support the various fundraising strategies, including individual contributions and stewardship, campaigns, corporate partnerships/funding, special events, and in-kind donations. This role requires experience managing nonprofit development operations related to fundraising, ranging from CRM management to budget-building to gift processing as well as prospecting, stewarding and solicitation of individual donors. This position does not currently supervise any staff.  The Director of Development holds an active portfolio of at least 50 Major Donors and 25 Prospective Major Donors. The Director is responsible for increasing the number of major donors to the organization by working to lift annual donors. The Director will support the design, develop and successful execution of the two annual campaigns – the Spring Campaign and the End of Year campaigns. In addition, the Director will play a key role in supporting the CDO with events and corporate sponsorships. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support of all Development activities (60%) 

  • Supports CDO in implementing the Strategic Development Plan, and is responsible for the oversight, proactive planning, and successful implementation of the plan.
  • Creates, implements and evaluates Annual Giving programs (Spring Campaign and EOY Campaign)
  • Perform general management responsibilities, including overseeing the production of annual plans, budgets, reports, and evaluation of fundraising activities.
  • Maintain a proactive, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of individual and corporate contributions for both the annual campaign and any capital campaigns.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of organization-wide development activities, including the Ten-Year Celebration fundraising gala, direct mail appeals, social media campaigns and online giving campaigns.
  • Significantly increase and manage a gift portfolio of individual donors. 
  • Creates and implements new fundraising strategies that increase the organization’s support from individuals with a special emphasis on developing new individual donor relationships.

Budgeting and Salesforce Administration (30%)

  • Create a comprehensive major gift level structure that includes the first time donors as well as loyal donors. The Development Director will work with the Salesforce consultant to create a system for tracking donor analytics, accessible to the entire Development team.
  • Maintain a portfolio of at least 30 current donors (defined as those giving a gift of $5,000 ) and work to increase their gifts by 20% by the end of 2024. 
  • Identify 20 lapsed donors that are prospects to be major donors and secure donations from 50% of them by June 30, 2024.
  • Identify and create relationships with 15 new major donor prospects and secure major gifts from 50% of them by December 31, 2024.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for 20 Moves Management donor prospects and develop a documented strategy and individual donor engagement plan to cultivate and secure donations by December 31, 2024.
  • Meet with CDO and each board member for managing their individual portfolios in order to identify new EOY donor prospects.
  • Measure, analyze and report on the status of the actual revenue vs. goals on a monthly basis with CDO and Development Committee.
  • Develop solicitation strategies and enter details for all connections weekly via tracking in Salesforce for every donor, prospect and MM donor. 
  • Work with C-suite to identify new resources and ensure funding priorities are aligned with the programmatic strategy and needs when major donors have specific requests.
  • Create, schedule and implement all Moves Management donor events (stewardship and cultivation).
  • Support the CDO in planning, implementation, and follow-up with presentations at conferences, summits, and philanthropic events. 

Liaison with Communications and Marketing (10%)

  • Create working relationship and regular check-in with Communications and Marketing Department to update and/or add content regarding development needs for collateral, social media and external messaging/storytelling.
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have at least 8 years of professional experience in a development role of a nonprofit organization; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
  • At least 5 years of professional experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Salesforce experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
  • Analytical Storyteller — Ability to gather relevant data from multiple sources and translate it into insightful stories and tactical recommendations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the Digital NEST.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
 

PREFERRED-BUT-NOT-REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Conversational or fluent in spoken Spanish; fluent in written Spanish.

  • Must have a valid CA driver's license, pass a background check, and be able to travel and work evenings or weekends occasionally, or as needed.
