Part – Time Executive Director Job Description

About the Denver VOICE

The Denver VOICE is a monthly street newspaper that provides economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Denver metro area. Since 2007, we have employed more than 4,400 people through our vendor program. Our mission is to facilitate a dialogue addressing the roots of homelessness by telling stories of people whose lives are impacted by poverty and homelessness and to offer economic, educational, and empowerment opportunities for the impoverished community.

Position Description

The part-time Executive Director of the Denver VOICE reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for budgeting and managing financial resources, supervising staff, overseeing day-to-day operations, working with external partners, and leading the VOICE to successfully achieve its mission.

Who We are Looking For

We are seeking a passionate and dynamic leader with experience working with people experiencing homelessness and poverty. Our goal is to find a resourceful leader to work in partnership with the board, staff, and vendors to create a viable organization.

Essential Responsibilities

Financial Management

· Plan for adequate cash flow to cover operational needs.

· Develop annual budget to be approved by the board

· Provide regular financial statements to the board that compares performance to budget and previous year or another benchmark.

· Work with the board to grow and maintain adequate operating reserves.

Operations and Programs

· Work with staff to develop, implement, and manage programs and daily operations.

· Serve as the primary organization planner, working with the board and staff to set goals and objectives and developing projections of needs and funding.

· Evaluate program effectiveness and reports on results to the board and staff.

· Maintain records and develop reports on program outcomes and impact.

· Ensure the mission and values are prioritized and practiced throughout the organization.

· Remain abreast of current trends in homelessness, poverty, street newspapers, and other relevant areas.

Public Relations

· Serve as spokesperson of the organization.

· Act as primary contact with governmental entities and community organizations.

· Establish positive relationships with partners, policymakers, media, and key stakeholders.

· Build community awareness of the VOICE's mission, vision, and impact.

Personnel

· Serve as chief liaison and communicator between the board and staff.

· Establish and maintain personnel policies and employee records system.

· Ensure optimal level of communication with staff to ensure successful execution of day-to-day operations and programming.

· Create a workplace culture that attracts, retains, and motivates top-quality staff and volunteers.

· Hire and manage staff and carry out annual performance reviews.

· Provide professional development opportunities to maintain qualified and satisfied staff.

Board of Directors

· Build and maintain professional relationships with each member of the board.

· Regularly fully inform the board on the overall health of the organization.

· Develop meeting agendas and create annual board calendar in partnership with the board president to ensure the board to fulfills its governance responsibilities effectively.

· Ensure materials for board meetings are provided to board members in a timely manner.

· Provide orientation for new board members

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s preferred

4 years’ experience in nonprofit management and staff supervision

In-depth understanding of the organization’s mission and purpose

Demonstrated financial management skills

Demonstrated leadership skills

Experience in program evaluation implementation and outcome measurement

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse populations

Proven ability to meet deadlines and deliver on business agreements

Proficient computer and word processing skills

Spanish language fluency preferred, but not required

Compensation & Benefits

· 20 hours/week hybrid schedule - $26.00 to $30.00 per hour

· Annual performance reviews and raises

· 2 weeks of paid vacation annually
