PRIMARY PURPOSE: Works with school staff, parents/guardians and community to plan, implement and evaluate a comprehensive developmental school counseling program at assigned campus. Counsels students to fully develop each student’s academic, career, social and emotional abilities and addresses the needs of special population students.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education/Certification:Master’s Degree in School Counseling
Valid Texas School Counseling Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills:Ability to align guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services and system support to the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs and the American School Counselor Association National Model
In depth knowledge of developmental stages of children and adolescents
Expertise in identifying needs related to diversity and ability to provide equity of access to Comprehensive School Counseling Programming.
Knowledge of evidence-based theoretical orientations and applicable therapeutic interventions for use in individual planning and responsive services
Ability to use relevant and necessary technology to access and deliver counseling curriculum and information
Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Experience:Two or more years of teaching experience highly preferred
Previous counseling experience at the appropriate grade level preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:Plans a developmentally appropriate guidance curriculum that:
- Actively engages students in the learning process and maximizes student potential
- Appeals to small and large groups of students
- Assists students in setting and attaining challenging academic, college/career/ and social/emotional goals
- Engages a variety of demographics through use of various resources
- Promotes student development in cognitive, social, and emotional domains
- Based on campus needs assessments
- Develops post-secondary planning and college readiness
- Aligns developmental guidance lessons with the Texas Model Program Curriculum Sequence and Denton ISD Graduate Profile
Manages a developmentally appropriate guidance and counseling program through planning, implementing and evaluating.
Responds to students needs through counseling individuals and small groups and uses appropriate counseling theories and techniques.
Assists students with significant transitions during changes in educational setting and communicates with appropriate personnel.
Provides consultation by collaborating with staff and community to design guidance, individual planning, responsive services, and other interventions.
Effectively communicates with parents/guardians, staff, and administrators to promote responsive interventions and coordinate student success inside and outside of school.
Facilitates and provides opportunity for parent/guardian involvement in education.
Makes appropriate referrals to community resources.
Participates in Multi-tiered System of Support process and implements effective referral processes to special programs
Actively collects and interprets data to inform program planning and practices
Implements research-based practices to improve the school counseling program
Advocates for positive learning environments that acknowledge and respect student diversity
Ability to understand needs related to student diversity including those related to cultural background, gender, ethnic, and learning styles
Ability to develop and maintain positive school environments that provide cooperative, inclusive, and purposeful counseling supports
Works effectively with campus staff and district team to promote positive change for individuals, groups, and the community
Promotes personal professional development through use of self-reflection, self-assessment, interactions with colleagues, attendance at professional development and professional learning communities, and professional learning conferences
Demonstrates effective communication through oral, written, and nonverbal expression
Demonstrates professionalism by continuous awareness and modeling of professional, ethical, and legal standards
Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education and Denton ISD School Board
WORKING CONDITIONS:Mental Demands: Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interprets policy, procedures and data; coordinates district functions; maintains emotional control under stress.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent district-wide and occasional statewide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds; prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions
MINIMUM SALARY: $53,972
DUTY DAYS: 187 days per year
APPOINTMENT: The appointment of this position will be recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Superintendent of Schools on the basis of the applicant’s training, experience, and expertise. The Board of Trustees must give final approval.
