Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is Hiring a VP, Enterprise Analytics & Business Intelligence Near Boston, MA

Overview

The Department of Informatics & Analytics (I&A) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), led by the Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO), is an operational department responsible for building a sustainable informatics and analytics ecosystem to support and grow the DFCI research, clinical, and business operations missions.

Reporting to the Chief Data and Analytics Officer of DFCI, the VP of Enterprise Analytics & Business Intelligence (EABI) will serve DFCI and its patients by developing and executing an Institutional EABI strategy, providing business intelligence and analytics solutions that transform data into insights and knowledge, and enabling data-driven decision-making for operational, business, and clinical departments. The VP of Enterprise Analytics & Business Intelligence is responsible for the vision, leadership, and execution of the EABI program at DFCI. The role requires developing partnerships with clinical, research, and operational VP and SVP leaders across the DFCI enterprise and building analytical strategies and roadmaps with each. It requires evaluating and developing strategic partnerships with leading technology and AI vendors and with peer organizations, such as Boston Children’s Hospital and Brigham Health. The VP of Enterprise Analytics & Business Intelligence will also partner with peers to oversee Informatics & Analytics client services, communications, and solutions supporting operational and business departments at the Institute, and therefore must represent all I&A functions in this capacity.

Under the direction of the VP, the EABI team is responsible for providing business intelligence and advanced analytics for an extraordinary range of healthcare data including medical and pharmacy claims, enrollment, electronic medical records, clinical trials, scheduling, billing, patient referral, research operations, and laboratory results. Using these data, the EABI team supports reporting, analytics, automation, and training in areas such as patient care, quality and outcomes, operations, and healthcare administration. The VP of EABI will lead the expansion of this team and their capabilities to provide analytical interrogation, predictive analytics, and AI services in partnership with business areas. These activities require an executive-level leader with deep technical expertise and effective change management skills to ensure success at enterprise scale.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Leads and manages the Enterprise Analytics and Business Intelligence (EABI) team of 40 FTEs, including 7 direct reports. The team is expected to continue growing through 2025, and at maturity will have 60-70 FTEs and include 4-6 Director-level (or above) roles.
    • Aligns the team’s objectives to institutional strategic initiatives, ensures EABI leadership prioritizes and executes appropriately, and drives accountability and measurement of value
    • Maintains proactive knowledge of market changes, trends, and pressures, including anticipating changes and opportunities within the business intelligence and analytics industry and corresponding internal impacts
    • Responsible for informatics and analytics support for a customer space of >1000 users, and execution of high-quality, timely service delivery, deployment, and training
    • Sets and directs the strategic implementation of the DFCI enterprise analytics and business intelligence program and its associated functions, platforms, and technologies
    • Serves as the DFCI data governance lead for data governance and stewardship, creating effective processes for establishing consensus definitions, documenting, and publishing definitions, updating, and incorporating old and new data elements to the reporting platform, reporting governance, and ensuring appropriate access models and security for all data types
    • Creates and leads the DFCI community of practice for business intelligence, and serves as an institute thought leader for analytics and business intelligence
    • Develops strategic partnerships with 30 clinical, research, and operational VP and SVP leaders across the DFCI enterprise, building analytical strategies and actionable, area-specific roadmaps with each. Ensures business objectives are met and drives accountability.
    • Serves as the general manager for the portfolio of Informatics & Analytics client services for all DFCI business & operational areas , representing all I&A capabilities, including analytics, data management, data science and engineering
    • Collaborates with other I&A leadership to align work across clients (e.g., clinical and research administration) and to build and direct multidisciplinary project teams in support of DFCI needs
    • Collaborates with the I&A AI Ops and Data Sciences team, the I&A Clinical Informatics team, and DFCI Information Systems to develop an enterprise strategy for use of AI in operational and clinical areas
    • Responsible for the data and analytics “health” of DFCI Operations business, maintains knowledge of market pressures, opportunities and changing needs
    • Explores opportunities for growth and development of the Institute related to data and analytics
  • IDE&E/Social Responsibilities
    • Utilizes DFCI values to govern decisions, actions, and behaviors
    • Demonstrates and embeds inclusive behaviors, and holds team and leaders accountable for the same
    • Invests in understanding diverse stakeholder cultures, motivations, and practices to enable consensus-based solutions
    • Provides mentorship to the EABI team and others within the Institute
    • Serves as a champion of Inclusion, Diversity and Equity initiatives
  • Financial Responsibilities
    • Responsible for management of approximately $8-15M in annual budget (operating capital), ensuring the efficient and effective use of team and departmental resources. Responsible for annual capital planning for the EABI space.
    • Understands context, complexity, and institutional impact of budget management and stewardship
    • Determines parameters, priorities, and implications for contracts
    • Shows leadership at an enterprise level in moving DFCI toward data-driven financial decision-making
    • Project portfolio delivers millions of dollars in annual benefits and/or cost savings
  • Human Resources Management Responsibilities
    • Establishes and creates a positive team environment through communication, leadership, and mentoring.
    • Works with EABI leadership team to develop individualized professional development paths for each employee with clear goals and objectives.
    • Mentors the EABI Leadership Team and other staff with a focus on client-service and portfolio-management skills
    • Leads annual talent and succession planning processes for EABI
    • Responsible for employment decisions and their budget impact
  • Functional Expertise
    • Recognized as the Institutional expert for analytics, business intelligence, and data governance
    • Responsible for bringing leading edge advances in field of expertise to improve EABI’s operation and impact on Institute performance
    • Evaluates leading technology and AI vendors and establishes partnerships as needed to advance DFCI analytics strategy
    • Ensures appropriate data security and patient-privacy practices and compliance with relevant U.S. and MA laws, DFCI policies, procedures, and regulatory agency requirements
    • Cultivates relationships with similar functions and peer leaders at MGB, Boston Children's Hospital, and other academic cancer centers
  • Communications/Interpersonal Responsibilities
    • Consistently and expertly teaches others: to lead effective prioritization discussions with stakeholders; present results persuasively and accurately; deliver good or bad news; say no when required; work comfortably and proactively across groups; collaborate effectively across the enterprise with all levels of staff; determine best approaches to client problems within I&A and external capabilities; identify and validate business needs underlying requests; put needs in a big-picture context; influence stakeholders to ask better questions; and sharpen focus on analyses with highest impact for DFCI
    • Ensures timely and appropriate communication throughout the team
    • Persuades and negotiates with others on issues and programs that impact I&A and the Institute and in extremely important, sensitive, and complex situations.
    • Represents the Chief Data and Analytics Officer within the Institute and in external forums

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: • Manages 40-70 FTEs, including consultants and contractors

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (MBA or PhD preferred) in analytics, informatics, or similar quantitative field
  • 20 years of relevant professional experience, with 10 in a biomedical or healthcare setting.
  • 15 years of direct people management experience, leading and building diverse teams of analysts, consultants, developers, data scientists, and people managers
  • 10 years of experience in a client-facing leadership role enabling clients to leverage data and analytics to drive organizational decision-making
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise-scale analytics projects and helping clients realize the value from analytics for strategic and tactical decision-making
