Medical Assistant Job Description

The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting physicians and medical staff in the clinic and ensuring the appropriate and timely patient flow. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the collective goal of providing excellent care for our patients. This position also must comply with all HIPAA regulations at all times.

Essential Functions

  • It is the responsibility of this position to provide patient care in the form of vital signs, education, ensuring accurate and thorough documentation in patient charts, and escorting the patient to appropriate areas of the clinic.
  • Outstanding customer service via phone and in person is imperative for this position.
  • Prepares patient charts for clinic visits as required by the physician.
  • Interviews patients, measures vital signs and records information in the EMR
  • Prepares examination rooms and maintains daily cleaning list.
  • Schedules patients for diagnostic testing and follows up to ensure completion of testing.
  • Prepares patients for diagnostic procedures through education of the procedures and expectations.
  • Communicates with patient regarding test results and plan of care by phone or mail as directed by Physician.
  • Formulates and documents patient care plans, charts, tests and examination results in the medical record
  • Schedules patients for pre-operative testing and is responsible for ensuring all testing and clearances are obtained prior to surgery
  • Prepares surgical packets, including consents, as instructed by the Physician
  • Secures insurance authorizations for DME and prescriptions
  • Contacts pharmacies to submit prescriptions and refill requests
  • Issues DME as appropriate
  • Responsible for ensuring completion of forms requested by patients
  • Responsible for the maintenance and supplies of clinic rooms and medicines.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood or urine samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Medical Assistant Certification or Nursing license preferred; or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years related Medical Assistant experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent time management.
  • Excellent organizational ability.
  • Possess the ability to plan and execute work projects.
  • Possess the ability to work productively, either independently or with other individuals.
  • Ability to perform EKGs, draw blood and administer injections
  • Ability to effectively communicate to staff and patients.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
  • Maintains a positive, caring attitude towards patients.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
  • Demonstrates initiative, insight, and judgement in decision-making process.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, medical documentation and procedures.
  • Must have experience with electronic medical records, insurance verification, front office and be familiar with surgery scheduling.
  • Must be able to jump in and work in a fast-paced environment with a professional and courteous demeanor.
  • Possess a positive attitude and ability to fit in as a collaborative team member.
  • Adheres to all Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintains regular attendance.

Infection Control Category
This job is designated as a Category I job using OSHA definitions. This means there are tasks that involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for any employee engaged in Category I tasks.

HIPAA Privacy & Confidentiality Requirements
The Medical Assistant will have access to confidential information, both written and oral, in the course of his/her employment and job responsibilities. In order to maintain the integrity of Protected Health
Information (PHI), this information is not to be disclosed to any unauthorized individuals as outlined in the Policies and Procedures of HRMD.

Physical Demands
Must be able to be on feet and walking for long periods of time. This position works in a well-lit, air- conditioned clinical environment. Must have ability to assist in lifting patients if needed. Must be able to work under pressure. Tasks may involve exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials.

Customer Service
All employees are required to maintain the highest level of customer service at all times. Employees must always speak in a kind, courteous and professional manner when dealing with a patient/customer or co-worker. All employees must exhibit a spirit of cooperation and positive attitude. Professionalism is to be maintained at all times.
