Job Description
• Complete Machine Safety Risk Assessments
• Provide machine safety expertise regarding corporate initiatives, capital projects, training and support to Cummins plants globally.
• Provide expert hands-on technical advice on issues, programs, and processes involving compliance with machine safety standards and policies and interpretation of local, national, and global requirements and regulations.
• Work closely with other members of the Global Manufacturing Engineering team to develop and implement internal guidelines and standards for machine safety.
• Lead or participate in significant machine safety system related incident investigations and root cause analyses.
• Support employee training on machine safety systems/processes.
Qualifications and Competencies:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering
• 3 years of hands-on progressive experience in leading & managing machine safeguarding and equipment safety system programs and activities. This should include experience in machine safety risk assessments, safety system evaluation, design, and implementation of Safety Functions (SRP-CS - Safety-related Parts of Control Systems) per ISO 13849-1 Performance Levels (PL) and Category architectures (including calculating PL using tools such as SISTEMA)
• Certification as a functional safety engineer (CSME or TUV certified functional safety engineer) a plus
• Strong technical knowledge of automation and control systems
• Experience in hazard identification, assessment, and effective controls
• Knowledgeable on the use of test and measuring equipment for electrical and mechanical validation purposes
• Ability to read electrical schematic, pneumatic schematic, hydraulic schematic, and other engineering drawings
• Working knowledge of Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
• Experience leading and participating in Machine Safety Risk Assessments with multi-disciplinary teams where participants have limited knowledge in machine safety
• Practical mind with experience in machinery operation
• Detailed understanding and application of Industry Standards and regulations relevant to Machinery Safety & Functional Safety for Machinery (ANSI, ISO, etc.)

• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Well-developed problem-solving skills
• Understand the hazards and risks associated with manufacturing equipment
• Strong understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components and controls (stack valves, valve blocks, check valves, and pressure monitoring)
• Understanding of sound engineering principles including ergonomics and noise control
• Familiar with a wide range of commercially available machine safeguarding products & systems such as Safety Interlocks Switches/Sensors, Presence sensing devices (opto-electrical, pressure-sensitive, etc.), Safety relays (Safety Interface Modules) and Safety PLC's, Safety integrated Drives/Servos (e.g., with features such as Safe-Torque Off or Safe Speed/Position Monitoring), Safety rated Pneumatic/Hydraulic valves.
• Experience commissioning and troubleshooting safety functions and related control system interfaces - including programming logic solvers and display/operator interfaces such as PLC's, programmable safety relays, and HMI's (Human Machine Interfaces - computer screens/displays)
Key Responsibilities:
• Responsible for performing risk assessments, verifications, validations, machine safety inspections, and system design reviews. This could include machine safeguarding and functional safety system reviews.
• Utilize knowledge and experience in machine control system (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and automation/controllers) and detailed controls schematics to evaluate machinery safety functions or reverse engineer designs and schematics from field inspection of the machinery controls when documentation is not available
• Develop work processes and specifications related to machinery safety such as Design/Engineering of Machinery Safeguards and Functional Safety Systems, Maintenance and Inspection programs, Testing and Auditing (including design verification and validation), Machinery and Safety Documentation, and Standards Compliance, and training as an authority on technical matters relating to machinery safety
• During capital project work and plant improvement projects, ensure the consistent use of standards by the plants and project teams, act as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Machine Safety, Functional Safety for Machinery, and Machine Safeguarding according to Cummins, international, and local industry consensus standards
• Work with remote team members from a diverse array of disciplines utilizing a strong attention to detail to complete project work without direct, day-to-day supervision
• Assist with the application and use of engineering controls to control hazards and reduce risks in machines and equipment
• Completing design/drawing reviews, engineering and implementing safety solutions to address any required remediation
• Reviewing, interpreting, and communicating new Cummins Corporate and governmental requirements regarding machine safety systems
• Co-leading and driving machine safety system improvement plan across all businesses within Cummins (engineering and remediation)
• Managing consultants and other machine safety system services used for needs that occur across the company (assessments, design, validations, etc )
• Assisting in resolving potential machine safety system non-compliance and enforcement actions, disputes, and litigation regarding machine safety system matters
• Evaluate safety function components (field inputs, final elements, and controllers/logic solvers) to drive optimization and standardization to applicable standards)
MUST HAVES:
• Minimum bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
• 2 to 4 years of experience.
• Strong technical knowledge of automation and control systems
• Well-developed problem-solving skills.
• Extensive experience leading and participating in machinery safety and conducting machine safety risk assessments (IMPORTANT MUST HAVE)
• Solid understanding of functional safety of machinery. This refers to the selection, installation, and configuration of protective devices and related control systems used in machinery to protect people from injuries.
• Understand the hazards and risks associated with manufacturing equipment.
• Advanced knowledge and experience in the evaluation of safety related control systems. This would include an understanding of relevant machinery safety standards.
