POSITION SUMMARY

The Patient Accounting Specialist functions in a variety of A/R positions. A primary responsibility is to provide coverage for the accounts receivable department including insurance billing/collections, self pay collections, financial department, patient benefits & patient registration as needed. Another primary function is to work collaboratively with the UR team on claims issues related to authorizations. This position acts as a support position to all accounts receivable departments to provide coverage when a department is short-staffed. This position requires a person to be a self-starter and have the flexibility to switch positions on a day-to-day basis.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  1. Processing daily transactions for Patient Accounting.
  2. Review and approve refunds to patients, guarantors and payers in patient accounts.
  3. Resolve authorization issues with payers for expedient claims processing and payments.
  4. Key payments, adjustments and charges with a high degree of accuracy.
  5. Monthly reconciliation of collections accounts.
  6. Supports Patient Registration and Patient Benefits by obtaining forms & releases at admission, generating accounts in patient billing software, managing daily residential census in patient accounting software, & verification of patient benefits.
  7. Supports Insurance Collections by billing insurance, auditing remits and contacting payers for claims issues.
  8. Supports Self Pay Collections by working patient accounts, processing payments, preparation & mailing of collections letters & packets for attorneys, and processing monthly statements and finance charges.
  9. Provides general support to all A/R departments to ensure workflow and patient care standards are maintained.
  10. Ensures that a welcoming, safe and healing environment is maintained for each patient and family throughout the continuum of care.
  11. Recommends ways to improve the quality and delivery of services.
  12. Ensures proper handling and distribution of company funds.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of company and patient information.
  14. Reacts productively to change and possesses the ability to adapt to different job duties quickly.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or college experience is required.
  • Two (2) years collections or other patient accounting experience required.
  • Intermediate computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Work and Excel)
  • Experience with AS400 and medical software preferred.
  • Ability to problem-solve, analyze, and interpret information.
  • Excellent customer service skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and supportive when dealing with hostile persons via phone.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively speak, read and write in English.
  • Ability to interact with co-workers in a collaborative and courteous manner while providing guidance, instruction, and training.
  • If recovering, two year of verifiable abstinence required with active participation in a twelve-step program preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Position is in an office setting that involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions. 
  • Position requires frequent contact with people in crisis, including those who are emotionally volatile and may require additional safety precautions.
  • Hours may vary according to specific position and may involve evening work as well as travel to other organization sites.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs. and move around campus on uneven and rural terrain.
  • Ability to speak, hear, see, sit, walk, stand, reach, and use fine/gross motor skills.
