Position Summary
The Structural Engineer contributes to solutions to improve our Architectural Expansion Joint and Fire Barrier product line and provides creative and diverse engineering solutions to a variety of engineering problems including seismic activities, building fire and smoke, and egress. This role collaborates with Balco’s Engineering and Sales teams to design, analyze, and prototype new design concepts to provide life-safety products for our customers.
This role is located in our Wichita, KS office, but a hybrid or remote option will be considered for qualified candidates.
Responsibilities
• Execute research, design and development projects in a timely manner and in accordance with project specifications
• Model parts using Solidworks; create assemblies, part drawings, inspection criteria, and other drawings as required
• Perform finite element analysis using Solidworks Simulation
• Interface with outside vendors to select and specify components
• Design and perform in-house testing to validate designs
• Conducting structural analysis and designing structures to ensure they meet safety and building code requirements
• Ensure manufacturability of product designs by working with production personnel and suppliers
• Create ECOs, part specifications, and other documents necessary to implement new products and design changes
• Provide technical support for products
• Provide recommendations and/or custom solutions for project-specific applications
• Foster teamwork by interacting with team members and other departments in a positive, solution-oriented manner.
• Assist the manufacturing facilities as needed in implementing and/or improving manufacturing techniques
• Assist the quality department in establishing and maintaining quality standards and troubleshooting product failure claims
• Research new technologies, emerging construction materials and methods, competitors and potential suppliers
• Be familiar with local education facilities, testing facilities, machine shops and equipment suppliers
• Travel to test labs and/or job sites to support Balco’s interest as required
• Perform other duties as needed
Knowledge & Skills
• Able to identify complex engineering problems, evaluate options, and implement effective solutions
• Able to leverage resources and/or engage others to meet project deadlines and budget
• Able to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a changing environment
• Able to communicate effectively with internal/external customers verbally and in writing
• Knowledge of construction methods, regulations, and national building codes (ASCE, ICC, IBC, etc.)
• Data-driven mindset with strong mathematical skills
• Proficient in Solidworks or similar modeling software and Solidworks Simulation or similar FEA software
• Proficient in MS Office Suite
Experience
• 5 years of Architectural/Construction industry experience
• Experience with structural engineering concepts, principles, and practices
• Experience in design, analysis, or inspection of architectural expansion joints is a plus
Education
• BS in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent is required. Master’s degree and/or P.E. is a plus.
Other Requirements
• Physical- This position operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets. This role visits the production floor and job sites from time to time and must be able to utilize required safety equipment.
• Travel – travel may be required for hybrid or remote employees.
Compensation is dependent upon experience and geographical location
