Lever is Hiring a Product Designer Near Chicago, IL

A BIT ABOUT US
Lever's vision is connecting human potential to meaningful work. Hiring is the most strategic challenge that every company faces, and Lever is one of the most recognized brands in talent acquisition software. As the innovation leader in our space, we are searching for great people to join us and push further.
We are proud of the company we’ve built so far, but we are even more excited for what is yet to come. Our 5000 customers include global leaders, startups that are disrupting industries, and businesses around the world. Lever has raised $123 million in funding, most recently a $50M Series D in November 2021.
With an overall gender ratio of 50:50 women and men, Lever is also fiercely committed to building a team culture that celebrates diversity and inclusion. We have been certified as a “Great Place to Work”, along with “Best Company Outlook 2022,” and “Forbes Best Startup Employers 2022,” and the list keeps growing! Our people are Lever’s biggest competitive advantage. For more information on our team culture, visit https://inside.lever.co/.
THE CHALLENGE
Design is one of Lever’s core competencies. As a Product Designer on the team, you will contribute to an elegant, seamless, and empowering user experience for the hiring teams who rely on Lever every day. We believe well-designed user experiences in the workplace are key to displacing stale and broken status-quo software. Built from the ground up with user-centered design methodology and principles, Lever is the only hiring software that is mobilizing entire companies to effortlessly collaborate on hiring.
As a Product Designer, you’ll use your expertise to take on design challenges across multiple stages of our design and delivery process. Understanding our users is core to how we work, through UX research, testing (and re-testing!) design concepts, and ongoing feedback from customers. We’re looking for a designer with a strong track record of designing high-quality digital solutions, with an eye to both the user experience and visual design; someone who takes a collaborative approach to solving problems, partnering with teams across Lever to deliver delightful, easy-to-use experiences to our users.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We’re building a world-class, product-first organization and assembling the right team to begin scaling aggressively. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to be part of something impactful and transformative, and will play a critical role in driving Lever’s success. This is also the perfect fit for someone who is keen to take on design projects that range from iterative feature improvements, all the way through to exploring new, innovative functionality.
THE TEAM
Our Design team is a small (but mighty!) group of generalists with a broad set of skills and experiences, who are continuously learning from each other. Our team is exceptionally collaborative, thoughtful, and passionate about user-centered design. We work closely with our partners in Product Management and Engineering. As part of this team, you’ll shape the Lever user experience based on our design principles and research insights, contributing to our mission to help the world hire with conviction and connect talent to meaningful work.

THE SKILL SET - WHAT WOULD MAKE YOU A GREAT FIT FOR THIS ROLE

  • 3 - 5 years of software design experience
  • A portfolio that showcases elegant, intuitive, user-centered designs
  • Experience designing workflow tools, productivity apps, or B2B software
  • Comfortable working at a company where we’re evolving our design practice
  • Experience working across multiple stages of the design process: from ideation, to creating and iterating on designs (evolving wireframes & user flows into mockups & prototypes); to testing and updating based on a variety of inputs
  • You’ve had ownership over design for a feature set, and shipped products with direct impact on user, customer, and business success
  • Familiarity with the product development process, from problem definition to launch and iteration
  • Initial experience with UX research: you’ve participated in research sessions, are comfortable talking to users, and use research insights in your work
  • A track record of collaborating effectively with PMs, engineers, and other designers — plus partnering cross-functionally with teams across the company
  • Motivated to solve complex design problems: you’re comfortable embracing ambiguity, and aren’t afraid to go back to the drawing board if your first (or second, or third!) idea isn’t successful
  • Solid understanding of UX best practices for designing digital experiences that are easy to use, accessible, and scale to support a large user base
  • Strong communications skills: you have a clear sense of the rationale behind your designs, can communicate the benefit and value of your work, and back it up with user research, data, and knowledge of design & UX best practices

THE SKILL SET - SOME NICE-TO-HAVES

  • Familiarity with HCM or other software in the Talent Acquisition space
  • Experience working with or contributing to a design system
  • Experience with more complex consumer products
  • Experience at a digital agency, designing apps or software for clients

WITHIN 1 MONTH, YOU'LL

  • Complete Ramp Camp, our onboarding program designed to get you up to speed on our business, vision, and team
  • Get to know the processes, tools, and systems the design team uses
  • Have one-on-ones with members of design, engineering, and product teams to learn how design fits into the product-development process

WITHIN 3 MONTHS, YOU'LL

  • Participate in improving the User Experience of a major product area, owning the end-to-end design process for your area
  • Participate in weekly design reviews and give feedback on other team members’ in-progress work
  • Deeply understand our users and their needs through leading a user research session. You’ll talk directly with recruiters, coordinators, and hiring managers to learn about the challenges they face
  • Learn about the customer journey by observing sales and customer success interactions. You’ll become familiar with the personas in the buying process and that use the product, and what their backgrounds and needs are
  • Know every corner of our app. You’ll get a sense of our strengths and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Design, launch, and measure the impact of an improvement to an existing feature. You’ll understand the current state of the functionality and the unmet need; explore ways to iterate and build on what is there; and converge on the best solution given what you’ve learned

WITHIN 6 MONTHS, YOU'LL

  • Research, design, and launch a product feature from start to end as the primary design owner. You will lead and execute the design phase and partner with product and engineering to ensure that the right MVP is built and launched
  • With product, report on the outcomes of one of your product launches to the product team. You will discuss how well goals and hypotheses were met, and what learnings to use in the next iteration.
  • Contribute to overall team improvement and scale

WITHIN 12 MONTHS, YOU'LL

  • Own and drive the definition and design of a major R&D product initiative. Translate company vision and product strategy into high-confidence and innovative new product development
  • Be able to advocate/defend the design view of what is right to others in the organization— with professionalism, maturity, and a balanced, holistic view of any competing viewpoints
  • Proactively identify and unblock knowledge sharing and communication challenges to unlock a scalable design organization
  • Educate, mentor and train team members across the entire company on design methodology and philosophy
