CP Flexible Packaging is Hiring a Product Development Engineer Near York, PA

Job Summary:

The Product Development Engineer will manage Projects from cradle to grave by leveraging their knowledge of films, converting, lamination, pouching and packaging techniques. The incumbent will lead Projects for innovative new products and will work to improve existing products and manufacturing best practices as well. The Product Development Engineer will assist the sales team by meeting with customers on site and work closely with customers to ensure project timelines are met with the highest regard for safety, quality and cost.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

New Processes:

  • Assist with the purchase, installation, & start-up of new-to-C-P equipment, arranging trials, attending Factory Acceptance Tests, and confirming capabilities of the new equipment
  • Assist with the installation and start-up of any new equipment

Business Development

  • Support the Sales Team by serving as a technical liaison to regional and private-label accounts
  • Assist sales with customer projects & issues, including issues at third-party manufacturers and co-packers
  • Attend first run customer approvals of new designs including interaction with customer representatives

Operational Improvements

  • Establish & document process conditions for specific equipment or structures (as directed)
  • Recommend new equipment or testing methods to improve efficiencies and quality procedures
  • Recommend process adjustments on existing equipment
  • Maintain manufacturing specifications for existing products
  • Evaluate and qualify new raw materials including print films and inks

Product Development Activities

  • Coordinate activities and perform product development & sample order testing for trials
  • Coordinate the production of trials with product development material
  • Develop and recommend structures, processes, and inks for specific customer applications or C-P markets, and develop manufacturing specifications for these structures
  • Work as member/ leader of new product implementation teams, coordinating projects with Department Supervisors, Quality Control & Machine Operators

Core Responsibilities

  • Must comply with all general Company-wide standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and any job or department specific SOP’s. SOP’s may cover the areas of (but are not limited to)
    • Employee Health and Safety
    • SQF and GMP (good manufacturing procedures) focused on eliminating contaminates in all packaging manufactured.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management

Supervisory Responsibilities: (if applicable)

  • None

Qualifications: (education, experience, specific skills, machinery/tools, etc.)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging, Chemical Engineering, or Chemistry
  • 3-5 years of work in product development
    • Prior experience with flexographic printing strongly preferred
    • Prior experience with extrusion lamination preferred
  • Self-starter with initiative and proactive work style, anticipating future needs
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written, for dealing with all levels of employees, customers, and suppliers
  • Experience and comfort with leading manufacturing teams
  • Manage projects and programs and be able to obtain buy-in from all levels of the organization to implement programs
  • Proficient computer skills; Word, Excel, Outlook, and databases

Physical Demands: (lifting 40 lbs., working at heights or underground, sitting/standing for long periods, including frequency, duration, requirements for use of specific tools or equipment, etc.)

  • Ability to speak, see and hear for communications with peers, Management, vendors, etc. on graphical and print issues. (consistently)
  • Visual color acuity required (consistently)
  • Ability to use keyboard, mouse, PC, spectrophotometer, and other industry tools. (consistently)
  • Potential need to lift or move rolls of approximately 50 lbs. or more (occasional)
  • Standing for long periods of time (intermittently)
  • Potential to work in or around heat and humidity (occasional)

Working Conditions: (travel, working hours, any unusual environmental conditions, and protective wear required.)

  • Travel will be required as needed to Company locations, customer facilities, co-packer facilities, and equipment manufacturers, estimated at 25 to 30%.
  • Must be able to work around solvents on a regular basis (intermittently)
  • Must be able to/comfortable with working around industrial equipment/machinery (consistently)
  • Must be able to wear/adhere to Company safety regulations regarding use of personal protective equipment including hearing protection, eye protection, etc.
  • Position would be primarily day shift, but will require flexibility for specific projects and tasks. Position work hours are expected to conform to customers’ work hours and the department core hours of 8 am to 5 pm Eastern Time Monday through Friday. Work during off-shifts and weekends may be necessary from time to time due to the scheduling of trials and customer approvals
