DEFINITION
Under general direction, to assist in the management of the Public Defender’s Office; to plan, organize and supervise the work of professional and clerical staff; to assist in budgeting, conducting special studies and related administrative activities; to defend selected cases; act for the Public Defender in his/her absence; and to perform related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direction from the Public Defender. Exercises general supervision and direction over professional and administrative support staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This single-position classification supervises professional and clerical staff assigned to the Public Defender’s Office; oversees, directs, and participates in all major activities and programs of the office; assists the Public Defender in various departmental management and administrative activities. The incumbent is appointed, disciplined, terminated by and serves at the pleasure of the Public Defender. This class is distinguished from the next higher level of Public Defender, which is a department head with overall executive responsibility for the functions of the department.
