County of Tulare is Hiring an Extra Help Firefighter Near Tulare, CA

This recruitment will establish an employment list to fill current and any future vacancies within the Tulare County Fire Department. The anticipated life of the employment list is six months. Current vacancy is with the Tulare County Fire Department located in various locations throughout Tulare County. The anticipated life of the list is six months. 

Applications will be reviewed by Tulare County Human Resources & Development. As extra help positions become available, County departments with the job openings select the most qualified and appropriate applicant for the position available. The number of hours and duration of employment varies by each assignment. Extra help employees may work in a variety of County departments in locations throughout the geographic county area.

Extra help employees may not work more than 1,559 hours in any fiscal year from July to June. An extra help employee who mistakenly works in excess of 1,559 hours in a fiscal year does not become a probationary or regular employee. Applications will be active for six months. If you are hired for extra help and you complete a work assignment and then you if you wish to be employed again, you must resubmit an Extra Help application online. DEFINITION 

To respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life, property, and the environment. 
 This is an on-call, hourly position functioning as a crewmember on a fire engine. This class is distinguished from Extra Help Fire Engineer in that it does not require the technical expertise to drive and operate all firefighting equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Supervision is provided by a Fire Engineer, Fire Lieutenant, or higher level department staff.

Respond to alarms and assist in the suppression of fires, and perform rescue and removal of persons from harm; connect and lay hose lines; operate nozzle and direct water stream onto fires; operate chemical fire extinguishers; operate and climb ladders; perform forcible entry when necessary; ventilate buildings; clean up and perform salvage operations after fires; assist in maintaining and caring for fire apparatus, equipment, fire station and grounds; respond to emergency calls, and administer first aid; attend scheduled drills and training; attend various fire prevention activities and public service events; keep current on necessary certifications as stipulated by CA state law and regulations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications are used as a guide for establishing the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license which are required and equivalent to the following.

Education/Experience: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.

Knowledge of: Basic maintenance principles; basic mathematical concepts; applicable tools and equipment; safe work practices.

Skill/Ability to: Work and communicate effectively with people of various education and socioeconomic backgrounds by respecting beliefs, interpersonal styles and behaviors of both clients and co-workers; operate contemporary office equipment inclusive of computer, keyboard, and all applicable electronic equipment; Operate equipment and assist in the suppression of fires, medical emergencies, and in the protection of life and property; learn technical fire fighting techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; operate and maintain fire fighting, rescue and emergency medical equipment, tools, and supplies; understand and follow written and verbal directions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, management, and the public; maintain accurate records; communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

Requirement:

Candidate must have a reliable, non-public form of transportation. Candidate will not work more than 1559 hours. Candidate may be scheduled at various stations within Tulare County. 

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California Class C driver’s license. 

DESIRABLE EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Completion of Basic Firefighter training, supplemented with college fire science courses. State of California certified Firefighter I or higher level certification. Public Safety First Aid or higher level certification. Professional Rescuer CPR certification.
