Dutchess County Department of Public Works
Salary: $22.25 Hourly

This is a hourly position in the Dutchess County Department of Public at Wilcox Park. This is
seasonal supervisory work involving the responsibility for the life and protection of persons
swimming or otherwise using the recreational facilities of a pool or a beach area. Incumbent may
be required to rescue persons experiencing difficulties in the water and administer lifesaving
techniques. The incumbent may be required to administer first aid for other injuries suffered in
the waterfront area. The position differs from Lifeguard by the addition of record keeping and
supervisory responsibilities. Supervision is exercised over seasonal employees. The work is
carried out under general direction from the administrative official.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Patrols bathing area during operating hours; patrols open water in a rowboat to prevent drowning
accidents; enforces waterfront regulations; supervises lifeguards at park; trains lifeguards in
proper lifesaving, first aid, and CPR techniques; submits weekly reports on lifeguards' activities;
leads and participates in beach cleaning; provides knowledge of emergency first-aid practices
and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must meet requirements of the New York State Sanitary Code – Section 6-2.20: Candidates must
possess acceptable aquatic/lifeguard certification recognized by the New York State Department
of Health and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification. All CPR certificates are valid
for one (1) year from course completion, regardless of the expiration date noted on the card.
Candidates must also have two (2) years (seasons) of lifeguarding experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Dutchess County Department of Public Works requires
candidates must be at least 18 years of age to be appointed.
FINGERPRINTING: A fingerprint supported background investigation is required before an

appointment is made to some positions. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law, the

Division of Criminal Justice Services requires that a fee accompany each such request for a

search. It is due once a job offer is made and accepted by the applicant.
