Director of Nursing
DESCRIPTION: The Director of Nursing (DON) is responsible for the overall direction and management of the Nursing Department and certain clinical services disciplines. The DON communicates and implements policies, procedures, and standards of practice necessary to attain/maintain quality of life and quality of care of residents, and federal and/or state regulatory compliance, while meeting budgetary requirements. The DON will demonstrate clinical expertise in accord with licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

1. Understands, creates and supports a care environment that fosters and affirms the mission of CSJ Initiatives:

2. Responsibilities:
a. Provides supervision, direction and oversight of the care and services delivered by the clinical team and clinical programs. Provides supervision to clinical support programs and personnel.
b. Works in conjunction with the Administrator to prepare the annual nursing department budget in reference to staffing, medical supplies and equipment needs.
c. Establishes a collaborative work environment that encourages staff involvement, development and empowerment.
d. Maintains and encourages participatory styles of leadership among the clinical team, recognizing that each department has a specific purpose.
e. Serves as an active member of the interdepartmental team by leading and participating in clinical meetings, departmental meetings, etc.
f. Participates in the development of, and implements, new programs and policies that will enhance the quality of care and life for the residents. Reviews programs and processes to ensure accuracy and current relevance.
g. Provides leadership in Quality Improvement functions for the facility. Assists in the development, implementation and monitoring of quality assurance/process improvement programs.
h. Maintains current knowledge of accrediting and licensing agency standards, industry trends and facility policies and procedures.
i. Prepares and submits reports when requested.
j. Other duties as assigned by the Administrator.
3. Performance Requirements:
a. Follows accepted nursing scope and standards of practice in accordance with the State Board of Nursing’s Nurse Practice Act.
b. The DON-I must be able to provide direct resident care services on demand or in instances where the DON-I is developing rapport with the team.
c. The DON-I must be able to move about the facility to observe all areas of resident care.
d. Maintains confidentiality of information as it pertains to residents, employees, and vendors.
e. Able to balance and prioritize several projects consecutively with varying degrees of interruptions. Strong time-management skills.
f. Able to manage people and systems.
g. Identifies and/or develops highly skilled managers and staff, providing for both career path and succession support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
a. Able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.
b. Able to bend, stoop, twist, kneel, push, pull and reach above shoulder level.
c. Able to walk and stand for long periods of time.
d. Able to see, hear or use prosthetic devices to enable use of the senses adequately.
e. Availability to work evening, night, weekend and holiday hours, as needed, with on-call responsibility.
f. Able to work in an atmosphere of numerous interruptions.
g. High potential for exposure to blood and body fluids, chemical and respiratory hazards, and infectious diseases.
h. Exposure to latex, plastic and/or materials which are used for personal protective equipment.
