Community Rowing Inc is Hiring a Director of Development Near Boston, MA

Community Rowing is conducting a search for our next Director of Development. CRI is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in public access rowing and sports-based youth development. What makes CRI unique is the scope and breadth of our services, delivering programs that serve over 15,000 youth and adults, para-athletes, and military veterans and their families of the greater Boston community. Our programs are conducted at the award-winning Harry Parker Boathouse and within a network of over 30 Boston Public Schools and the public middle schools (upper schools) of the City of Cambridge as well as local VA hospitals and VA residences.

Our next development leader will be energetic, collaborative, and entrepreneurial and will embody our organization’s values of diversity, belonging, growth, and resilience. They will also benefit from strong organizational leadership and structures to engage our community in meaningful ways.

The Director will oversee a team of four experienced managers and will oversee an array of resources dedicated to our continued success in engaging and stewarding CRI and our community at large. (The current Interim Director is not applying for the permanent position).

Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development has responsibility for all areas of CRI’s fundraising, external community engagement, government affairs, branding and communications. The Director is the key stakeholder who is accountable for the success of our staff and for delivering services in line with key organizational objectives. Politically, commercially or reputationally sensitive issues and complex problems impacting Development and CRI are managed by the Director. The Director of Development is expected to lead by example in the design of the culture and work environment including proactive and thoughtful support of all CRI staff and volunteers and plays an integral leadership role in the overall trajectory of CRI.

Areas of Responsibility

Vision and strategic direction

  • Effectively support CRI to enable staff, rowers, and volunteers to exist in the safest environment in rowing
  • Lead key organizational initiatives and continuous improvements to attain long-term and short-term strategic objectives
  • Oversee and provide strategic direction and ensure relevant information is effectively communicated and decisions are implemented in the spirit of CRI’s mission and values.
  • Play a key role in the design and enforcement of CRI’s organizational culture
  • Lead fundraising initiatives among grantors, foundations, sponsors, special events , and individuals

Financial Management and Control

  • In partnership with the Executive Director, plan, organize, and manage CRI’s financial affairs to support the fiscal health of the organization.
  • Direct all aspects of financial management to ensure that appropriate financial controls are in place and operational.

Strategic Human Resources

  • Ensure that appropriate policies and procedures are in place for all aspects of employment and volunteering.
  • Attract, recruit, develop, engage, and retain the right staff and volunteers to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Manage staffing and oversee hiring for the Development Group

Communication

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Development staff.
  • Ensure that CRI communicates key messages effectively to internal and external audiences in collaboration with the senior team and CRI management.

Risk management

  • Work with the Executive Director and the leadership team to identify and mitigate risks. Ensure that risks are reported, cataloged, and analyzed regularly.

General Management Responsibilities

  • Manage and motivate staff in a way that is consistent with the values and management aspirations of CRI.
  • Develop staff in Development to improve their skills and performance in their roles.
  • Ensure that day-to-day business affairs are appropriately managed and to do all that is reasonably practicable to create a collaborative and cooperative workplace environment.
  • Lead progress against plans and objectives and assist the Executive Director in meeting organizational goals and objectives.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships to support and promote CRI

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 30 lbs. in the form of rowing machines and other equipment
  • Ability to step on uneven surfaces to safely move between all water vessels and docks
  • Ability to stand for extended periods in adverse weather conditions on water and on land
  • Ability to work long hours, weekends, and holidays as necessary
