Job Duties

The Office of the State Inspector General (OSIG) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Special Agent. The Office of the State Inspector General’s mission is to deter fraud, waste and abuse while promoting accountability and excellence within the Commonwealth. Under the direction and guidance of the Supervisory Special Agent, this Special Agent position is responsible for conducting thorough criminal investigations and administrative inquiries of incidents, or allegations of incidents of fraud, waste, abuse or corruption within Commonwealth of Virginia executive branch agencies. This position ensures that all assignments meet accepted professional standards and are timely and accurately reported. This position is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of prevention activities to reduce the vulnerability of Commonwealth assets and resources to fraud, waste, abuse or corruption.

Minimum Qualifications

Current DCJS basic law enforcement officer certification. Working knowledge and experience with methods and techniques meeting legal and accepted professional standards in conducting complex criminal and administrative investigations. Working knowledge of applicable federal and state statues and administrative policies. Working knowledge of procedures used to identify, examine and analyze evidence; prepare and preserve evidence for court presentation or administrative hearings. Working knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence. Working knowledge and experience conducting interviews of complainants, subjects, and witnesses to include properly documenting the interview in investigative reports. Ability to prepare comprehensive report. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with Commonwealth of Virginia agency managers and personnel, law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, citizens and the general public. High school graduate or equivalent.

Additional Considerations

Experience conducting complex and multi-jurisdictional criminal investigations, particularly investigations involving financial crime or fraud. Certification by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the Association of Inspectors General.

Occasional in-state travel, both overnight and on multiple days, in support of agency business needs. A background investigation prior to employment is required for the successful candidate, which will include medical clearance, drug screen, psychological evaluation, fingerprint-based criminal history check, and driver’s license check. Also, completion of a Statement of Economic Interest at the time of employment and annually is required thereafter. This position may be eligible for telework opportunities.
