Commonpoint Queens is Hiring a Summer Camp Assistant Director Near Forest, NY

Explorer Day Camp offers a variety of subjects to awaken child’s many interests. Campers explore individual talents, try new activities, make new friends, and most importantly, HAVE FUN! Campers will enjoy access to the high-quality facilities and fields of Forest Hills High School and will have the opportunity to swim daily at the exclusive Bay Terrace Pool Club. Building their own day camp program on a weekly basis, campers will choose from two activities for each period - swimming, soccer, arts, science, wildlife, strategy games, tennis, music, and much more! With “Discovery Day” field trips and other camp-wide events, no curious mind is left behind.
Seasonal Position (Jan- May)/ Full Time (June- Aug).
Salary: 8k to 12k based on experience.
Pre-Camp & Throughout the Year:
  • Attend and support preparations for pre-camp events such as, camper orientation, parent orientation, staff training, and pre-camp staff events.
  • Serve as the "overflow" person for staff interviews to help administrative team get through all support and group staff. Anticipate approximately 10 individual and/or group interviews per month and participate in second interviews for leadership staff positions.
  • Attend one in-person (or sometimes virtual) leadership meeting per month starting in January. (7-8 in total).
  • Use the Spring to learn the basic policies and daily responsibilities of the position. (e.g., daily schedule, use of Campsite, staff policies, etc.)
  • Have monthly communication with the Camp Director to remain up to date on plans for the summer.
In Summer:
The Summer Assistant Director position is a senior leadership role at camp that oversees units of campers grades - 3rd, 4th, 5th. The following are core responsibilities for this position. 
Communications:
  • Edit and send out unit newsletters, ensuring accuracy and appropriateness for families.
  • Support unit heads during high volume call times.
  • Guide and sometimes co-lead calls with Unit Heads for challenging, sensitive phone calls.
  • Ensure reminders are being sent to families through Remind app and email.
  • Be a communication bridge between camp staff and Unit Heads, as well as between Unit Heads and the Camp Director.
  • Partner with the UH and camp director when parent communication needs to be escalated.
Leadership & Unit Head Supervision
  • Serve as direct supervisor to 3-4 unit heads. 
  • Meet with Unit Heads daily. During their meetings they will check in on their staff and provide any camp wide updates. 
  • Support Unit Heads with staff challenges and ensure follow up to bring closure to situations. 
  • Ensure Units are operating safely (emotionally and physically safe). 
  • Ensure appropriateness of conversations and behaviors of campers and staff. Support Unit Heads on addressing behavior challenges for both staff and campers. 
  • Monitor all Explorer policies, helping all members of the camp community adhere to our policy and procedures.
  • Continually update Camp Director with any challenges or concerns related to Unit Heads and camp. 
  • Manage the Performance Evaluation process to ensure Unit Heads are prepared to deliver a meaningful evaluation to group staff. 
  • With the other AD and Camp Director, evaluate the Unit Heads on their job performance and opportunities for growth. 
  • Ensure quality parent communication and follow through is happening between UH and Parent (camper concerns, lost & found).
  • Participate in regular strategy sessions with leaders to identify and address ongoing areas of focus, including the response to crisis situations and the support of critical areas impacting the experience of campers. Maintain open communication and update all critical issues with Camp Director.
Camper Care:
  • Coordination with Director, Assistant Director, Unit Heads, and/or other key staff partners in the support of each camper’s experience and well-being while in attendance.
  • Know all campers who have special needs, such as transition challenges, IEP’s, special food needs, etc. 
  • Help to solve challenges related to each camper’s well being. enjoying program, and connecting to friends. 
  • Understand why a camper is absent from camp.
  • Manage and be very aware of all injuries, especially serious injuries that require urgent or follow up care.
  • Manage communication and coordination for any enrollment change that occurs during the summer, such as extensions, a camper being removed from camp, or returning after a sensitive incident.
Program Support: 
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of the assigned area including the supervision of camp staff. Provides guidance and direction to staff involved in Explorer Day Camp.
  • Responsible for ensuring that all programs, activities, and events comply with Explorer policies. 
  • Help to collect any outstanding paperwork from late hires. 
  • Ensure group staff are being cared for and receiving quality direction on a daily basis. 
  • Ensure staff are receiving timely feedback from supervisors.
  • Create systems to maintain staff motivation and provide recognition. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that all programs, activities, and summer camp events (Family Fun Nights, color war events,etc.)comply with Explorer policies.
  • Participates in formulating and implementing policies and procedures.
Qualifications & Certifications:
  • 3 years of camping experience and/or similar leadership experience.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Management, Non-profit, Education, or any field that requires strong organizational and management skills.
  • Strong organizational and management skills, with a passion for high standards.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills; with business writing experience a plus.
  • Outstanding leadership skills, with empathy and compassion for others.
  • Demonstrated skills in critical thinking, time management, multi-tasking, budget management, and decision making.
  • Strong desire to work on a team and deliver excellence to a greater cause.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and experience with database management a plus.
  • Drivers license required.
