Columbia Energy is Hiring a Fabrication Shop Lead Near Idaho Falls, ID

Columbia Energy & Environmental Services is an established small business headquartered in Richland, WA, which offers full-service engineering, design, fabrication, instrumentation and controls, and technology development. We are focused on the pursuit and execution of - design/build/test projects for federal and commercial clients. Columbia Energy currently has an opening in our Idaho facility for a Fabrication Shop Lead.

Job Summary: The Fabrication Shop Lead oversees the safety, quality and timely execution of activities of shop fabrication. This position is responsible for supporting a positive environment, adhering to company policies, safety, profitability, and assisting in assessing future needs in equipment, training, and personnel. The Shop Manger combines leadership skills with an extensive knowledge of welding processes and welding economics to mentor and train staff as well as plan, monitor, and safely deliver fabrication/welding projects according to schedule and budget.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and engineering plans and applying this information to job specifications
  • Assisting with preparation of fabrication schedules
  • Actively participating in the selection, retention, and development of personnel including interviewing, performance appraisals and promotion recommendations
  • Mentoring and Training employees in processes and equipment
  • Ensuring all employees work to safe working procedures and practices
  • Preparing shop floor for daily work
  • Ensuring projects are proceeding according to the Schedule and Fabrication, Inspection, and Test plans (FIT) and that each job is performed in the proper sequence
  • Ensuring sufficient task analysis are completed to carry out work safely
  • Ensuring the required fabrication methods are followed and adherence to all Welding Procedures
  • Promote and integrate advanced fabrication, welding and processing technology including welding automation
  • Taking the lead for eliminating root causes of quality issues/errors
  • Delegating employees daily assignments with clear expectations
  • Following-up on daily assignments and providing balanced feedback to Management.
  • Re-assigning employees when necessary based on production, plan, availability, and workflow
  • Reviewing fabrications for accuracy and quality requirements
  • Estimating hours remaining to be completed on jobs
  • Assisting with technical inquiries
  • Assisting in Q&A (Quality & Assurance) investigations
  • Ensuring all documents are completed properly
  • Evaluating and determining staffing requirements and technical capabilities of personnel
  • Requesting equipment, materials, and consumables as required within limits of authority
  • Monitoring the use of materials and care of equipment and shop to minimize waste and damage
  • Communicating with other departments (project management, engineering, drafting, quality and estimating)
  • Interfacing with QA/QC, Engineering team, and customer personnel
  • Reporting unsafe conditions and unsafe equipment.
  • Inspecting work to determine accuracy and acceptability
  • Ensuring that all documentation (including weld records) are filled out correctly and kept current as work progresses

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Government contracts.
  • Experience working to a NQA-1 or ASME Section VIII program.
  • Working knowledge of Pipe, Plate, Sheet metal, and Structural Steel.
  • Experience with precision, tight tolerance stainless steel fabrication.

Physical Requirements:

  • Employee will be required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, and lifting.
  • Will talk and hear to communicate. Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, pull: objects, materials, controls and tools repetitively. May be required to lift, carry and move up to 50lbs.
  • Will work at heights, climb ladders and stairways, work off of platforms and man lifts, and may occasionally work out on an open structure using the appropriate fall protection requirements.
  • Will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and leather work boots.
  • Will be required to work in hot/cold/damp environments.

  • This position is performed in a fabrication shop. The atmosphere is fast paced and deadline oriented with high focus on safety and quality.
