JOB SUMMARY

• This position assists in the installation, maintenance and repair of campus-wide buildings and facilities; assists in performing general carpentry, repairs, maintenance or construction work;
• assists skilled technicians in performing minor repairs of plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems to maintain campus facilities;

independently performs maintenance tasks requiring a limited degree of professional skill; and performs related work as required.

This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

• Assists skilled technicians in performing maintenance and repair tasks such as carpentry, locksmith, electricity, heating, plumbing, venting and air conditioning (HVAC).
• Assists with hanging sheetrock, laying tile, carpet, linoleum, etc., as needed.
• Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
• Loads and unloads equipment and supplies.
• Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement.
• Paints walls and other surfaces as needed.
• Moves furniture and other heavy items as requested.
• Maintains accurate records on maintenance / repair work completed.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK :

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of experience in repairs and maintenance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

• Knowledge of how to properly perform manual tasks.
• Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed.
• Skill in the use of various trade tools and equipment.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to perform arithmetic.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment.
• Knowledge of the concepts and techniques of on-the-job training.
• Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

Requires medium-to-heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing or raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed.

WORKING CONDITIONS :

Work environment may risk exposure to bright / dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and / or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and / or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease / pathogens, toxic / caustic chemicals.
