ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY
Associate Controller
ABOUT THIS POSITION
Summary: This position leads financial reporting a to ensure accurate, timely and compliant financial data for general purpose financial statements, data feeds to the State of Colorado, and management reporting for decision-making. Although there a no direct reports, this position is expected to provide leadership in partnership with the Controller for ensuring effective university-wide accounting processes and the appropriate use of accounting systems including but not limited to the current Banner ERP. A strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the ability to apply them to public higher education, the ability to analyze and improve business processes, and strong technical skills in data analysis are foundational to this position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
  • Prepare periodic journal entries for accounting estimates, accruals, (and other monthly, quarterly, and annual closing entries (e.g., interest expense, depreciation & amortization expense)
  • Review general ledger account activity, reconciling data and analyzing results
    o Record journal entries to adjust and correct balances
  • Extract monthly financial reporting data from the University's Banner/Ellucian software for feed and reporting into the State of Colorado's CORE financial system
    o Administer, evaluate and adjust all financial data reported and residing in CORE
  • Prepare, evaluate and report federal and state financial reporting
  • Prepare monthly reconciliations of all bank accounts
  • Assisting the preparation of the annual financial statement audit and supporting schedules and reports
    o Gather and revise narratives documenting the design and intent of internal controls
    o Coordinate the collection of all PBC schedules required by the financial statement auditors
    o Review account balances for accuracy then report significant fluctuations between periods
    o Prepare account and report schedules for inclusion in the Management Discussion & Analysis report and the Notes of the financial statements
  • Assess campus inventories annually (e.g. Outdoor Program, Bookstore)
  • Calculate annual common area maintenance charges and assessments
  • Update Banner approval queues
  • Help ensure proper functioning of internal controls and custody of assets by assisting with prescribed internal audit processes and procedures and coordination with external resources as necessary or required
  • Assist Controller and others with various tasks as assigned
    Required Qualifications:
  • Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis or major in Accounting.
  • Three years of experience in accounting including account reconciliation, balancing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience with general ledger functions
  • Strong attention to detail and good analytical skills
  • Foundational knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, and organizational skills are required.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills supporting shared team outcomes and successes.
  • Knowledge of complex accounting and / or ERP systems
    Preferred Qualifcations:
  • Experience in governmental accounting including working under state and federal regulations.
  • Knowledge of Ellucian Banner software
