Nurse Practitioner, Opioid Treatment Program

Part time, 6 hrs per week

SUMMARY: To oversee and provide direct medical care to patients with opioid use disorders, including performing medical evaluations, and provide periodic medical monitoring. This position will be responsible for developing medical protocol and procedures together with medical leadership.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

• Complete history and physical and examination of all incoming patients.
• Consult with Program Physician to obtain medication order.
• Assess patients for admission follow up, annual medical review, and as needed throughout the treatment episode.
• Review external medical records and lab results, obtain physician recommendation where indicated, implement treatment adjustments as indicated.
• Consult and coordinate care with external medical providers ensuring treatment continuity and patient safety.
• Evaluate the medical status of newly admitted patients, consulting on and determining appropriate plan of action for special needs or circumstances outside of established processes.
• In collaboration with other members of interdisciplinary treatment team, develop recommendations and referrals to additional or ongoing treatment services.
• Notify and consult with Medical Director or assigned Program Physician as needed.
• Recognize and initiate appropriate response to medical emergencies. Lift patient if necessary for safety.
• Consult with and provide direction for medical staff as needed in person or via telephone.
• Participate in coordination of medical care, treatment team meetings, and similar other activities as needed.
• Work collaboratively with CODA Directors/Managers to ensure that safety and industry standards are maintained program wide.
• Maintain current licensure by updating job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations.
• Travel to sites to provide services, pick up supplies or deliver medications.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

• Must possess and maintain an active Nurse Practitioner license.
• You must have graduated from a NLNAC- or CCNE-accredited master's or doctoral degree nursing program. You must hold national certification in a NP specialty through one of the OSBN-approved organizations.
• Graduated from a nurse practitioner program specific to the NP category you are seeking within the last year; or,
• Graduated from a nurse practitioner program specific to the NP category you are seeking & practiced as a nurse practitioner at least 192 hours within the last two years; or,
• Practiced a minimum of 960 hours as a nurse practitioner within the last five years.
• All initial NP applicants must provide documentation of a minimum of 384 hours of RN practice, which includes assessment and management of clients and is not completed as an academic clinical requirement or continuing education program. This requirement is waived for individuals practicing in the specialty area as a licensed certified nurse practitioner in another state besides Oregon for at least 384 hours in the advanced practice role.
• The practice requirement allows for advanced nursing practice in a teaching, research, consulting or supervisory role in addition to direct practice.
• All nurse practitioner applicants must additionally meet the requirements for prescriptive authority found in Division 56 of the Oregon Nurse Practice Act.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

• Demonstrated consistency in the application of “6 Rights” of medication administration.
• Demonstrated understanding of and ability to adhere to established principles of patient safety.
• Make judgments in practice, substantiated with evidence, that integrate nursing science in the provision of safe, quality care and that promote the health of patients within a family and community context.
• Comprehensive knowledge of substance use disorders, management and evaluation of substance use withdrawal syndromes, and treatment principles OR the ability to show proficiency in these areas within six months of hire.
• Ability to utilize both oral and written communications skills to effectively communicate with patients, co-workers, community resources, supervisors, and various other individuals encountered in the course of performing work while maintaining patient confidentiality and establishing professional rapport.
• Ability to maintain professional communications and boundaries while managing complex situations and interacting with individuals diagnosed with substance use or co-occurring conditions.
• Ability to operate a computer, utilize basic MS Office programs, and effectively navigate and maintain patient records in an electronic medical records system.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

• Current unencumbered Nurse Practitioner license.
• Unrestricted DEA certificate to prescribe controlled substances.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to acquire within 90 days of hire.
• Crisis prevention certification (such as CPI) within 90 days of hire.
• A valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
• Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs.
• Must be able to perform BLS for 15 minutes continuously and maintain BLS certification.
• Must be able to utilize personal protective equipment and follow safety procedures while interacting directly with patients and working in a clinical environment, including handling of laboratory specimens.
• Must be able to operate a personal computer, including reading from a computer monitor, keyboarding, and using a mouse.
• Must be able to negotiate staircase, reach, bend, and handle objects.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

• Reliable transportation between multiple worksites.
• Consistent attendance and punctuality are required of this position.
• A negative result on all pre-employment, reasonable basis, and post-accident drugscreens.
• An acceptable criminal record as determined by DHS, the Oregon Administrative Rules, and the Oregon Revised Statutes; and no current supervised parole or probation.
