Job Summary:

The purpose of the role is to ensure effective management of the HR function for North America by enhancing people effectiveness. This requires the efficient design, planning and implementation of HR strategies, plans, policies, and procedures. This role is effectively one of an Internal Consultant, providing support services to Senior Managers, Managers, and staff on all Human Resource issues.

This senior role will involve handling all HR activities, therefore liaising with all Managers and staff within North America. The scope of this position will require travel to all CA locations within North America.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Directing the HR functions and team in North America, including providing leadership, managing, and planning work activities and providing guidance to all subordinates.
  • Accountable for all HR activities in North America. This includes planning, design, analysis and implementation of all HR and compensation and benefits initiatives and recommendations on HR as well as compensation and benefits strategy, plans, projects, and activities.
  • As a member of the NA Executive Leadership Team, actively participate in the planning and execution of the company’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Reporting of HR metrics and updates for Board Report.
  • Partner with Departments Heads to understand their key issues and business needs and provide sound HR advice and consultation on issues around people management, employee benefits, executive and employee compensation, HRIS, career development and organization effectiveness. Translate business strategies and objectives into the appropriate HR actions and initiatives.
  • Ensure prompt and effective management of employee relations issues. Develop and implement programs which foster sound employee relations and engagement.
  • Provide strategic direction to professional and seasonal staffing functions. Ensure development and execution of effective staffing strategies and implementation plans to meet staffing demands.
  • Identify and recruit top talent for key leadership roles across the organization. 
  • Review and analyze market, industry best practices, trends, and internal feedback to develop competitive rewards and recognition programs to meet our business goals and drive employee satisfaction. Direct on-going evaluation and market analysis of non-exempt and exempt wage rates and salary structures. Ensure overall competitiveness and alignment between local and corporate guidelines.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with other departments in the organization with respect to workforce planning and compensation.
  • Review and evaluation of all HR policies, procedures and activities in North America aligned to business challenges and identification of areas that require improvement. Responsible for the way the HR team North America is structured and how tasks should be distributed.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, administration, and operation of efficient and effective HR programs aimed at improving productivity and morale, developing, and retaining key personnel and generally improving the HR practices and procedures.
  • Ensuring adherence to applicable USA and Canadian employment law and other labor regulations.
  • Management of labor budgets and forecasts as required.
  • Ensuring that skill requirements are met through workplace planning, staff development and retention programs.
  • Provides performance improvement counselling and coaching to management in achieving their desired departmental goals and objectives.
  • Provide support and advice on all aspects of human resources to the client group including Operations, Sales and Marketing, Finance, and IT.
  • Management of performance of the HR team North America, within our standard Performance Review system. Including review and development of KPI’s, measuring them, and reviewing them with subordinates, and completing assessments every 12 months. This will also include coaching and development of subordinates.
  • Development and maintenance of organization structures, in consultation with Managers. Recommendations on staffing, reporting, and resourcing. This includes monitoring staff numbers compared to budgets and other approvals.
  • Management of recruitment, selection, and employment processes. This includes obtaining recruitment authorizations, ensuring development and maintenance of appropriate procedures.
  • Development, management, and evaluation of onboarding program for new employees.
  • Management of benefit programs including communication to all employees.
  • Development and maintenance of compensation and benefit policies and plans, including conducting salary surveys and making recommendations on pay, as well as implementation of annual salary review process.
  • Management of HR records and information, including provision of statistics and reports, and maintenance of HR files and personnel files. This includes preparation of monthly and annual reports and presentations.
  • Development, management and implementation of HR policies and procedures.
  • Management and implementation of Performance Management System.
  • Provision of advice to Managers on any HR issues or employment law. This may require research and external consultation.
  • Maintenance of a high level of employee contact and sound employee relations. This includes regular meetings with senior staff and maintaining a high level of telephone contact. It includes the management of employee grievances and issues impacting employee satisfaction.
  • Development and management of employee recognition programs, and various activities to support the development of our values and culture.
  • Review of internal staff training needs analysis, and development of training plans. Management and coordination of training activities, especially in non-technical areas.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and workshops to Managers and staff on Managerial and HR issues. Make recommendations on staff communication, including involvement with staff meetings, intranet communication and other activities.
  • Any other activities related to developing and managing the HR function in North America.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with HR Concentration preferred.
  • At least 7 years’ experience in an HR managerial role.
  • Competence in the use of MS Office packages, especially in Outlook & Excel
  • Demonstrated finance and budget understanding
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with people at all levels
  • High standards of professionalism and integrity
  • Experience in leading a small HR team and the ability to build and maintain an effective HR NA team
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships
