Citynet is Hiring a Fiber Splicing Technician Near Bridgeport, WV

Position Summary: 

This position is responsible for overall fiber optic placing splicing and engineering activities required to establish end-to-end fiber connectivity between locations. Responsible for fiber optic testing results to ensure activities were completed correctly and within the required technical specifications. 

Fiber Splicing Position Responsibilities: 

  • Terminate, splice, and install a variety of fiber optic connectors and enclosures including both loose tube fiber and ribbon fiber
  • Proficient in fiber color codes, in using fiber tools and fiber optic test equipment including fusion splicer, traffic identifier, power meter, and OTDR
  • Knowledge of applicable electronic equipment and specialty tools
  • Ability to troubleshoot damaged fiber, effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to read, understand and update splice documentation and maps as required
  • Climb or use ladders on poles for accessing the aerial fiber plant
    Perform aerial construction activities, including but not limited to, installing aerial fiber, installing fiber storage (snow shoes) in a safe and efficient manner
  • Perform underground construction activities, including but not limited to, pulling new cable/fiber through short conduits, opening underground vaults or pedestals making minor repairs if required
  • Demonstrated expertise in construction skills, including underground and aerial telecommunication construction techniques, fiber splicing techniques, emergency restoration practices, and general industry knowledge

Fiber Splicing Essential skills and experience:

  • Splice cables, using hand tools, epoxy, or mechanical equipment. 
  • Inspect or test lines or cables, recording and analyzing test results, to assess transmission characteristics and locate faults or malfunctions. 
  • Access specific areas to string lines or install terminal boxes, auxiliary equipment, or appliances, using bucket trucks, or by climbing poles or ladders, or entering tunnels, trenches, or crawl spaces.
  • Set up service for customers, installing, connecting, testing, or adjusting equipment. 
  • Place insulation over conductors or seal splices with a moisture-proof covering. 
  • Travel to customers' premises to install, maintain, or repair telecommunication electronic reception equipment or accessories. 
  • Pull up cable by hand from large reels mounted on trucks; then pull lines through ducts by hand or with winches. 
  • Lay underground cable directly in trenches or string it through conduits running through trenches. 
  • Install equipment to maintain the strength of communications transmissions. 
  • String cables between structures and lines from poles, towers, or trenches and pull lines to proper tension. 
  • Measure signal strength at utility poles, using electronic test equipment. 
  • Dig trenches for underground wires or cables. 
  • Explain cable service to subscribers after installation. 
  • Compute the impedance of wires from poles to houses to determine the additional resistance needed for reducing signals to desired levels. 
  • Use a variety of construction equipment to complete installations, such as digger derricks, trenchers, or cable plows. 
  • Fill and tamp holes, using cement, earth, and tamping devices. 
  • Dig holes for power poles, using power augers or shovels, set poles in place with cranes, and hoist poles upright, using winches. 
  • Participate in the construction or removal of telecommunication support structures.
  • Clean or maintain tools or test equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  2. Must be able to clearly see color and shading in plans and materials.
  3. Must be able to lift and carry up to 80 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
  4. Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.
  5. Must be able to ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
  6. Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions.
  7. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of Jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  8. Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  9. Must have the vision to allow differences in colors, shades, and brightness.
  10. Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business.

Work Environment: 

Good working conditions with the absence of disagreeable conditions, aside from travel. Must be able to work in OSP construction activities, including exposure to heavy equipment noise, dust, and able to work in summer or winter conditions.
