Job Title: Safety, Security, & Training Director

Department: Safety

Reports to: General Manager

FLSA Status: Salary Exempt

Employment Status: Full Time | Non-Union

Job Summary

The Safety, Security, & Training Director will lead and coordinate the development and implementation of comprehensive safety, security, occupational health policies, and training programs for the organization. This role encapsulates the responsibilities of overseeing the safety and security procedures, accident and incident handling, training, and development initiatives.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Ensures that employees maintain and comply with safety policies, including OSHA safety log, and other administrative requirements.
  • Selects and assigns instructors to conduct specific training and development, provide performance evaluations, and assess training materials.
  • Possible oversight of direct report.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

    • Ensure that employees follow safety policies and procedures through audits, in accordance with OSHA regulations and Federal/State laws.
    • Administer bus accident and incident claims handling and supervise the claims adjusting service.
    • Review and investigate accident/incident information to develop preventive techniques; provide reports on safety performance.
    • Develop and implement the District's Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan, Safety Management System, Hazard Analysis Team, Safety Reporting Program.
    • Work with departments to foster a safe environment; conduct presentations/training related to safety.
    • Develop and monitor safety goals, action plans, loss prevention programs, safety awards, and incentive programs.
    • Stop operations that could harm employees or equipment, conduct safety inspections, and review accident and incident reports.
    • Assess training needs through surveys, interviews, and communication with managers.
    • Create, organize, and present various forms of training including at orientation, annually, as needed, etc.
    • Develop unique programs to fulfill workers' specific needs, maintain records, and evaluate program effectiveness.
    • Prepare and implement training budget; maintain records and reports of expenses.

Training and Experience

  • Associate degree or higher in Occupational Safety and Health or related field
  • Minimum three years of experience in a safety capacity.
  • Combination of education and experience may be acceptable in lieu of degree for the right candidate.
  • Experience in Public Transit
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, local laws, and risk management principles.

Licensing Requirements

  • Current Commercial Driver's License (or ability/willingness to obtain one)
  • Accident Investigator Certificate
  • National Incident Management Certificate

Skills

  • Prioritizing, assigning, and evaluating work
  • Conducting investigations, identifying safety and risk hazards
  • Performing facility and job site inspections, preparing reports
  • Developing and facilitating training sessions
  • Excellent communication, organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, or related software

Travel:

  • Some travel may be required for conferences, training, and off-site collaboration with other agencies.

Working Conditions:

  • Majority of work performed in an office setting, with some outdoors and office work, working closely with others and alone.
  • Possible exposure to dirt, dust, moderate noise, electrical/chemical/mechanical hazards, communicable diseases, angry/difficult people, and construction sites.
  • Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking, standing, or sitting for prolonged periods of time; kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting, and crouching during assigned activities, pushing and/or pulling, climbing stairs, lifting, and carrying materials.
  • Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organization's facilities.

General Working Hours:

  • Monday - Friday, with some overtime as needed.
