Guidance Counselor

The Influence1 Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was organized exclusively for purposes to include educational management, community engagement and economic development. Initiated as a philanthropic measure of its founder, Influence1 has grown to serve the local community in multiple capacities with varying programs geared for community and youth enrichment.

In addition to its charter schools, City University School of Liberal Arts, City University School Girls Preparatory, and City University School of Independence, Influence1 is also responsible for the 38106 Joint Agency Collaborative, 1Urban Gallery, and the Memphis Starts With Me© community program.


City University Schools

City University Schools is a network of open-enrollment college preparatory schools established under Tennessee charter school laws in under-resourced communities throughout the state.

Since its founding in 2004, City University Schools strives to meet the need of public education as well as the demand for alternative institutions committed to post-secondary preparation.

Each school operates on the principles of providing a valuable, well-rounded academic experience through the support of a diverse and dedicated group of qualified educators and administrative staff, an extended school year and rigorous college preparatory curriculum.


Mission

City University Schools will prepare its students with the necessary skills to be twenty-first century scholars and citizens. As college preparatory schools operating as Centers of Excellence for Student Development, City University Schools will provide academically rigorous and socially enriching educational opportunities for its scholars. Position Goal

To provide college, career, personal, social counseling and advisement with scholars/parents individually, in small/large groups. Give advisement on all aspects of educational planning & development/implementation of programs to meet needs of scholars & parents; collection & reporting of data.


Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Plans and executes a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and

counseling program.

  • Implements a balanced comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program

that includes Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services, Individual Planning, Scholar

Class Scheduling and System Support components.

  • Promotes continuous improvement of a balanced comprehensive developmental

guidance and Counseling program that includes Guidance Curriculum, Responsive Services,

Individual Planning, and System Support components.

  • Promotes the balanced provision of program content areas (self-confidence development;

motivation to achieve; decision-making, goal-setting, planning, and problem-solving skills;

interpersonal effectiveness, communication skills, cross-cultural effectiveness; and

responsible behavior).

  • Facilitates senior seminar execution and/or other program resources.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, scholars, parents, and the community to plan,

implement, evaluate, and promote continuous improvement of a developmental guidance

and counseling program.

  • Advocates the school developmental guidance and counseling program and counselors’

ethical and professional standards with school personnel, parents, students, and the

community.


Guidance

  • Involves scholars, professors, parents and others to promote effective implementation of

the Guidance Curriculum through class scheduling and scholar promotion.

  • Accurately and without bias guides individuals and groups of students and parents to

plan, monitor, and manage the student’s own educational development including provision

of information regarding post-secondary opportunities and handling scholar transcripts.

  • Accurately and without bias guides individuals and groups of students and parents to plan,

monitor, and manage the student’s own career development.

  • Uses accepted theories and effective techniques of developmental guidance to promote the

career, educational, personal, and social development of students.


Counseling

  • Uses accepted theories and effective techniques to provide individual developmental,

preventive, remedial, and/or crisis counseling.

  • Uses accepted theories and effective techniques to provide group developmental,

preventive, remedial, and/or crisis counseling.


Consultation

  • Consults with parents, school personnel, and other community members to help them

increase the effectiveness of student education and promote student success.

  • Implementation of TSSAA & SCIAA rules and input of information, schedules and transcripts

in all systems.

  • Consults with school personnel, parents, and other community members to promote

understanding of student development, individual behavior, the student’s environment,

and human relationships.

  • Collaboratively provides professional expertise to advocate for individual students and

specific groups of students.


Coordination

  • Coordinates people and other resources in the school, home, and community to promote

student success.

  • Uses an effective process when referring students, parents, and/or others to special

programs and services.


Student Assessment

  • Adheres to legal, ethical, and professional standards related to assessment.
  • With the assistance of school personnel, interprets standardized tests results and other

assessment data to guide students in individual goal setting and planning.

  • Enhances the work of school personnel and parents in guiding student goal setting and

planning by promoting understanding of standardized test results and other assessment

data.


Professional Behavior

  • Demonstrates professionalism, including a commitment to professional development.
  • Attend all professional development opportunities (SCS, TSSAA, SCIAA & others) to support

all facets of the position.

  • Advocates for a school environment that acknowledges and respects diversity.
  • Establishes and maintains professional relationships with administrators, teacher, other school personnel, parents, and community members.


Professional Standards

  • Adheres to legal standards including school board policies.
  • Adheres to state, district, and campus standards, regulations, and procedures.
  • Is committed to current professional standards of competence and practice.
  • Promotes and follows ethical standards for school counselors.

Terms of Employment

This is an 11-month position. All contractual information shall be outlined in the contract between the Teacher and the City University Schools Board of Trustees. The Counselor shall be evaluated in accordance with Board policy.
