City of Winter Haven is Hiring a Communications Assistant Near Winter, FL

This role will carry out the City’s public relations and communication strategies and maintain the City’s brand guidelines. The Communications Assistant will create content, track engagement, and represent the City consistently across all communication channels.

Essential Job Functions:

This position will be an integral part of the team responsible for public relations and communications on behalf of the City. The Communications Assistant will:

  • Collaborate with the Director of Public Affairs and Communications, internal teams, and partners.
  • Write content for both print and Web including the City website, blog, brochures, social media, and newsletter.
  • Monitor media coverage, campaign effectiveness, social media engagement, and other engagement platforms.
  • Ensure all promotional and marketing materials meet the City’s brand guidelines and communications strategy.
  • Identify and resolve any issues with content in a timely and professional manner.
  • Coordinate meetings, presentations, and information packets for legislative efforts.
  • Dialogue with citizens in person, over the phone, via email, through a website chat bot and across social media platforms.
  • Represent the City professionally and accurately across all channels.
  • Interface with elected officials, department heads, and peers across all City departments and divisions to achieve communication and project goals.
  • Build and maintain contact databases and complete general office duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate special projects and events produced within the City Manager’s Office such as CityU, Grant & Aid, and City Government Week.

The Communications Assistant may attend occasional evening or weekend meetings, events, conferences, training sessions, and seminars on behalf of the City. May operate a City or other vehicle to travel to various locations to perform work. This is not intended to serve as an all-inclusive list of essential job functions; the performance of other essential functions may be required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Great interpersonal skills; creative and innovative; strong attention to detail.
  • An understanding of social media strategies and media relations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suites, Canva, Hootesuite, and other similar tools; or a proven ability to learn software quickly.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to effectively manage multiple projects at once.
  • Above average knowledge of various communications channels and platforms including news media, owned media, shared media, and earned media.

Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from a four (4) year accredited college or university with major coursework in communications, public relations, marketing, or similar is preferred.
  • Some training or experience in areas of photography, videography, graphic design, website management, press release writing, and/or social media management.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience that is determined to be directly related to the foregoing specific requirements may be substituted.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Florida drivers’ license and a good driving record as determined by the City of Winter Haven.
