Job Duties:

Virginia Beach is a diverse, vibrant, appealing community with a dynamic year-round tourism economy that serves the needs of local residents and visitors alike. The Virginia Beach Convention & Visitor’s Bureau (CVB) develops and promotes Virginia Beach as a first-class, year-round destination that contributes to the quality of life and a diverse local economy.

The Marketing Communications Unit manages advertising campaigns, public relations, social media, content creation, collateral development, graphic design and research for domestic leisure travel and internal business unit clients including international tourism, sports marketing, meetings and conventions, group tour, visitor information services, resort management and convention center.

  • Work to achieve and communicate the CVB’s vision and goals by providing assistance to the Director of Public Relations and Public Relations Agency of Record.
  • Work with the PR director to promote Virginia Beach as a premiere travel destination.
  • Assist in securing earned national and international media campaigns for a variety of markets including but not limited to sports, meetings & conventions, groups, leisure and more.
  • Assist with planning, coordinating and executing special events including in-market media familiarization trips.
  • Under the direction of the PR Director, assists in community outreach and relationship development by conducting and gathering research to aid in the development of a variety of communication materials, methods, programs, and opportunities aimed to inform and involve locals.
  • Under the direction of the PR Director, assists with the needs of the CVB’s industry partners & stakeholders.
  • Assist with fulfilling interview requests from leisure and trade publications, sites and blogs.
  • Assist with sending images to travel writers & editors that will accompany articles about Virginia Beach.
  • Assist with tracking national, local and regional media coverage.
  • Updating the CRM media page (press hits, press releases)
  • Sending Media Leads via Partner Pipeline and corresponding with those who have submitted.
  • Maintain relationship with Virginia Tourism Corporation and reply to leads.
  • Assist with creating gift bags / presents for clients.
  • Maintain online reputation management platforms (TripAdvisor, Yelp).
  • Assist with schedule management, travel arrangements, expense tracking/reporting and reviewing invoices/contracts for the Director of Public Relations.
  • Experience in proactive and reactive pitching editors, writers and influencers.
  • Travel and working some nights & weekends will be required
  • Manage procurement and invoice processes and services as the divisions’ purchasing card reconciler

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS:
Requires any combination of education (above high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields such as public relations, communications, marketing, or journalism utilizing the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Positions within this class have been designated as Alpha I positions requiring employees to work during inclement weather, regardless of the City's operational status.

Preferences:

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.

o Highly skilled at written and oral communications
o Be a capable administrator, skilled at managing multiple tasks simultaneously and work well under pressure
o Enjoy planning and managing events, from meetings to media and influencer events
o Be meticulous in attention to detail, communications and schedules, often under tight deadlines
o Be a clear, candid and succinct communicator
o Proficiency with Microsoft, PowerPoint and Excel social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn)
o Well versed in schedule management
o Well versed in travel arrangements
o Well versed in itinerary planning
o Experience with travel expense processes and reconciliation of expenses
