City of Virginia Beach is Hiring an Engineer I or II Near Neck, VA

This position may be classified as an Engineer I (A12 $60,707.50 to $94,096.63) or Engineer II (A14 $66,930.00 to $103,741.50), depending on qualifications and experience of the selected applicant

  • Individual will be responsible for the project management, design, permitting, and construction of maintenance-related stormwater engineering projects. 
  • Individual will perform a variety of engineering duties which may include any combination of: project management, basic engineering design for municipal projects, review of designs for municipal projects and review and approval of designs for private developments within the corporate limits of the city and related work as required, such as: commercial and residential site plan review, subdivision plan review, highway plan review, storm drainage design, and water and sanitary sewer design for city operations. Individual will be able to coordinate and resolve conflicts with city departments, outside agencies, contractors, and residents.
  • Individual will assist in the management of the department’s stormwater program.

Engineer I Job Description

  • This individual will perform a variety of engineering duties with direct oversight of an Engineer III or higher-level engineering position. Representative work duties include but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and review specifications, plans, estimates, and reports and monitor project expenditures.
  • Coordinate with city departments and outside agencies
  • Communicate with city departments and the public.
  • Use the principles and procedures of engineering as it relates to municipal work with knowledge of engineering design standards
  • Use knowledge of local and state ordinances as they relate to construction, and various Stormwater management operations and standards.
  • Review project plans for erosion and sediment control and stormwater management requirements.
  • Field work as required

Engineer II Job Description

  • This individual will perform a variety of engineering duties with direct oversight of an Engineer III or higher-level engineering position. Representative work duties include but are not limited to:
  • Prepare and review specifications, plans, estimates, and reports and monitor project expenditures.
  • Coordinate with city departments and outside agencies
  • Communicate with city departments and the public.
  • Use the principles and procedures of engineering as it relates to municipal work with knowledge of engineering design standards
  • Use knowledge of local and state ordinances as they relate to construction, and various Stormwater Management operations and standards.
  • Review project plans for erosion and sediment control and stormwater management requirements.
  • Perform basic design and review of stormwater project and drainage plans.
  • Assist with public meetings
  • Field work as required
  • Project Management oversight of the design and review of construction plans and specifications for storm drainage related projects

Additional tasks may include managing, or assist with hurricane protection programs, pump station maintenance programs, stormwater BMP programs, dredging projects, and contracts. Individual may be responsible for the review of construction plans and specifications for stormwater pump stations, pipe rehabilitation, lake and canal dredging, Virginia Pollutant Discharge Elimination System MS-4 permit compliance projects, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) flood mitigation assistance grant program projects, or field engineering and management support for operation and maintenance of public facilities. Individual will be conducting field inspections/investigations as needed.

**This position is ALPHA 1 and may be required to work more than their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies **
