Position Description

The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full-time General Maintenance Worker II in the Right of Way Division of the Public Works Department .

Summary of Duties

As an General Maintenance Worker II-ROW you will:

  • Perform landscape maintenance duties, such as mowing, trimming, mulching, and other tasks as directed for general care and maintenance of maintained areas.
  • Performs finish and rough-cut mowing of all ROW Division maintained areas.
  • Operate and perform general maintenance on mowers, edger, blowers, and other hand-held tools.
  • Reports daily to the Crew Chief.
  • Aid in the construction and repair of landscape beds and irrigation systems as needed.
  • Performs task related to trimming & pruning of trees, shrubs, and ivy walls.
  • Apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers as directed.
  • Patrols ROW Division maintained areas for litter and debris.
  • Works the assigned schedule and complies with the City’s timekeeping and attendance policy.
  • Assist in annual tree trimming inspections.
  • Assist in quarterly street light inspections.
  • Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, whether natural or acts of war.
  • Stay abreast of, and comply with, all City and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Director and/or their designee(s).

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate must be extremely organized and able to manage the logistics of multiple duties with professionalism and strong communication skills. In addition, they will have a strong attention to detail and ability to work in a fast-paced environment—both critical for success in the role, as are high levels of accuracy, timeliness and dependability. Ideal candidates will also look for innovative, trailblazing solutions to challenges We are looking for someone who can establish and maintain effective working relationships within the organization and work effectively with all levels of employees and management.

Education and Expirience:
High School Education or GED Certificate required
Experience in landscape maintenance, construction, irrigation, tree care or general maintenance environment is preferred, but not required
Training (License and/or Certification):
Valid Texas Class “C” Driver License, or the ability to obtain one within first year of employment.
