CITY OF SPOKANE is Hiring a Temp Seasonal - Dwight Merkel Summer Camp Director Near Spokane, WA


The Summer Day Camp Director is a leadership role responsible for overseeing the overall operation of a day camp program for children aged 7-11. This position involves supervising camp staff, developing program curriculum, ensuring the safety and well-being of all campers, and fostering a positive, inclusive, and dynamic camp environment. The Director will work closely with staff to create a supportive atmosphere that encourages personal growth, learning, and fun for campers.
The following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Report to Spokane Parks and Recreation Wellness and Enrichment Supervisor 
  • Staff Supervision and Development: Provide ongoing support to ensure staff are well-prepared to meet the needs of campers. Foster a team-oriented environment that encourages collaboration and excellence.
  • Safety and Compliance: Oversee the implementation of safety protocols and procedures to ensure the health and safety of campers and staff. Ensure compliance with all regulations and standards related to camp operations.
  • Communication and Community Relations: Serve as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians at the camp site, addressing concerns and providing updates on camp activities and camper progress. Develop and maintain positive relationships.
  • Administrative and Operational Management: Responsible managing inventory, planning, monitoring, and reporting. Ensure all camp logistics are efficient, effective, and adhere to established policies and procedures.
  • Program Evaluation and Improvement: Regularly assess program outcomes and staff performance. Implement changes to enhance the quality of the camp experience, promote camper retention, and meet organizational objectives.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience working with children aged 7-11 in a camp, school, or similar setting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage children and work well with a team.
  • Enthusiasm, patience, flexibility, and creativity in working with children.
  • Ability to problem-solve, handle emergencies, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, and lead a variety of activities.
  • Basic first aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).
  • Must pass a background check.
  • Must be able to work up to 8 hours/ day outdoors in summer weather.
