This is a part-time seasonal position. This position is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the overall camp program and approves all daily camp activities as approved by the Spokane Parks and Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor. They are responsible for communicating with parents, guardians, and other camp staff during and after camp hours of operation. The Camp Director is responsible for the care, safety, protection, and supervision of the camp environments, staff, and participants. The planning, preparation, and organization of daily activities and site (set-up/clean-up) as well as all administrative duties of camp. This position reports to the Parks and Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
Dates 
  • Training: June 17-21, 2024 Times/Days TBA 16 hours of training plus additional task assigned by Director.
  • Camp: June 24 to August 9, 2024 (with July 4-7 off).
  • Monday- Friday hours are variable according to position
  • Days and hours are subject to change depending on program needs.
  • Additional hours may be available for leading other Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS) programs and events.
Interviews take place in April and May, so please get your application in by April 23rd, 2024.The following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.
Planning
  • Familiarize oneself with campers' registrations and needs.
  • Work one on one with Camp Office Support Staff to obtain registrations and camp spreadsheets. 
  • Familiarize oneself with the Civic Rec program and have all contact information for caregivers or parents.
Staffing 
  • Interview prospective Camp Activity Leaders and Camp Office Support Staff. 
  • Plans and implements staff training prior to start of camp.
  • Organizes and coordinates camp staff weekly schedules (days off, hours worked, etc.)
  • Administers and/or schedules trainings as well as regular group meetings with staff.
  • Collect timecards from staff and review to ensure they are completed correctly.
  • Be certain there is always enough camp staff while with campers (1:4 ratio).
  • Supervises and makes recommendations to the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor regarding camp staff hiring or disciplinary action.
  • Works closely, cooperatively, and amicably with all staff members.
  • Create a communication system with Activity Leaders to effectively schedule and maintain camp activities. Examples are text streams, Google Doc lists, etc.
Documenting
  • Ensures Refund Permission Slips are turned in prior to first day of camp. 
  • Ensures Field Trip Permission Slips are signed and turned in before Wednesday prior to the Friday field trip. 
Financials
  • Controls camp expenditures under an operating budget previously defined by the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  • Monitors petty cash allotments under the budget previously defined by the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreations Supervisor.
Camp Operations
  • Plans the weekly schedule of camp activities with staff.
  • Supervises games and activities created by camp Activity Leaders.
  • Ensures all materials needed for camp activities are available by the start of camp, or has a plan to purchase prior to activity.
  • Ensures correct amount of PFDs are available as well as proper PFD procedure is being used during swim times.
  • Arrange and assign field trip groups to staff (1:4 ratio).
  • Pool/Sunscreen checks completed and logged. Pool checks are done every 10 minutes and sunscreen checks every hour.
Participant in Monitoring
  • Compiles and oversees participant behavioral charts.
  • Observes the participant culture to see if there are any problems and implements solutions as necessary.
  • Monitors and ensures appropriate participant behavior and adherence to regulations.
  • Fill out all injury and accident reports for every incident in a timely manner and deliver to Camp Office Support Staff. 
  • Secure and remind participants to take medication and complete the medication log accordingly.
Parent/Guardian Interactions
  • Respectfully handles questions, problems, and concerns of parents/guardians before and during camp.
  • Interacts professionally with caregivers and caregiving organizations.
  • Monitors caregiver interactions with participants to ensure quality of care.
  • Make sure parents sign incident reports after reviewed by Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  • Greet parents at check-in/out during the morning and afternoon. Answer any questions parents may have during this time.
  • Manage upset/concerned parents and answer all questions.
Community Interaction
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with Library staff and community members.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with Shadle pool staff and community members.
  • Create and maintain relationships with local law enforcement in and around Shadle Park in case of emergencies.
  • Create and maintain relationships with other parks entities to ensure safety of camp staff, participants and operations.
General
  • Knowledge of camp policies, rules, and guidelines, as well as general practices and procedures followed in the Parks & Recreation Department.
  • Oversees the development of the program, plans and implements all camp activities including weekly trips and special activities and/or assignments with approval from the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  • Establishes and adheres to a procedure for handling all difficulties related to health, behavior, and other problems and reports incidents to the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  • Handles emergencies and reports them to the Spokane Parks and Recreations, Therapeutic Recreation Supervisor.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Have worked in a camp or daycare setting for a minimum of one year, and have at least 60 credit hours of college courses at an accredited college or university.
  • First Aid & CPR certification is required prior to the first day of camp. 
  • Ability to frequently walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear for multiple hours without a rest period. 
  • Ability to operate objects or tools and reach with arms and hands. 
  • Ability to occasionally climb, balance, stoop, or kneel. 
  • Ability to frequently lift (5-10 lbs.) and infrequent heavy lifting of up to 50 lbs. 
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle and must possess a valid driver's license without restrictions. 
  • Ability to work in the field and be exposed to all types of weather conditions.
  • Ability to pass a background check. 
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Ability to work independently and complete paperwork as needed.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public, and community partners. 
  • Knowledge of equipment used in recreation programming and access to mobile communication.
  • Must be able to attend all training as specified.
Desired Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in planning programs, the ability to work collaboratively with others.
  • Possess excellent leadership, management and organizational skills. 
  • The Camp Director must be patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled, have a passion for working with individuals with disabilities, and dependable.
  • The applicant should have excellent communication skills and be able to follow written and oral instructions.
