CITY OF SPOKANE is Hiring a Temp Seasonal - Dwight Merkel Summer Camp Counselor Near Spokane, WA

The Camp Counselor for kids ages 7-11 plays a pivotal role in creating a safe, fun, and educational environment where children can explore, learn, and grow during their summer camp experience. This position requires a high energy level individual with a genuine passion for working with children. The counselor will ensure a safe and positive camp experience that fosters personal growth, teamwork, and development of life skills. Furthermore, the candidate should have the desire to inspire and empower young people. They also should be dynamic communicators, detail-oriented, fun-loving, and confident in their ability to motivate campers.

The following Responsibilities and Requirements are functions the individual who holds or desires the position must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation.

Program Planning and Execution: Design and implement a variety of activities tailored to children aged 7-11, including sports, arts and crafts, outdoor adventures, and educational games. Ensure activities are engaging, age-appropriate, and promote physical activity and creativity.
Safety and Supervision: Maintain constant supervision of campers to ensure their safety and well-being. Implement and follow all camp safety guidelines and protocols and respond effectively to emergencies.
Behavior Management: Use positive reinforcement to manage camper behavior. Establish and maintain clear behavior expectations and manage any disciplinary issues with sensitivity and fairness.
Communication: Actively communicate with camp staff and parents about camper experiences, achievements, and concerns. Provide daily updates to camp leadership and participate in staff meetings.
Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other camp counselors and staff to create a supportive and positive camp environment. Assist in the planning and execution of special events and activities.
Personal Growth and Development: Encourage campers to try new things, develop new skills, and foster friendships. Support the personal development of each camper, including building self-esteem and promoting independence.

Must be 16 years of age or older.
Experience working with children aged 7-11 in a camp, school, or similar setting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage children and work well with a team.
Enthusiasm, patience, flexibility, and creativity in working with children.
Ability to plan, organize, and lead a variety of activities.
Basic first aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date).
Must pass a background check.
Must be able to work up to 8 hours/ day outdoors in summer weather.
