About the Position:
The Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level classification and performs the more routine and unskilled, semi-skilled tasks in a street maintenance crew. The incumbent performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains and related public works facilities; utilizes a variety of power and hand tools; and performs related duties as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Maintenance Worker to support the Operations and Maintenance Division in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City streets, curbs, sidewalks, gutters, storm drains, and related public works facilities.
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of skilled experience in public works related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
A Maintenance Worker I may be considered for advancement to Maintenance Worker II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class and obtaining a valid Class B Commercial driver's license. Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director of Human Resources, and are described in a separate document.
Typically, a Maintenance Worker I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within an 12-24 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Maintenance Worker II duties as described in the established performance criteria.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy: Class C for Maintenance Worker I; Class B Commercial for Maintenance Worker II. A Class B Commercial license with Airbrake Endorsement required for some assignments.
Employees in this classification may be required to participate in call back or standby duty and are subject to be on-call, which may include a rotating schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts and in or near street traffic with significant exposure to unsafe or hazardous drivers. The employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to unsanitary conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level is frequently loud.
Health Insurance - Eligible to receive a City contribution of $715.00 (Employee only), $1,377.00 (Employee 1) or $1,841.00 (Employee Family) to help offset health, dental and vision premiums. Eligible employees who waive all medical, dental, vision, supplemental life, and supplemental AD&D benefits will recieve an annual "Health Insurance Waiver Stipend" of $3,500.00 every first paycheck of December.
Retirement for Current Members - For employees hired after 1/1/2013 who are current members of California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12 and have not been separated from service from such agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2.7% @ 55; highest single year of compensation.
Retirement for New Members - For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who are not a member of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be 2% @ 62; 3 year final compensation. New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the “normal cost” of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
