City of Salem is Hiring an Engineering Technician III Near Salem, OR

What you will do: 
Working under the supervision and guidance of a licensed professional engineer or surveyor, this position supports survey, design, and inspection functions for the City’ storm drainage, water, sewer, and transportation utility.
 
As part of a design team, this position generally utilizes AutoCAD to prepare plans and drawings, develops draft specifications, draft cost estimates, and similar project development functions.
 
As part of a survey crew, this position generally performs technical survey work in the field including use of survey equipment, recording of field notes and field staking. In the office, work involves property records and legal description research, field data processing, preparation of final survey documents, and similar survey functions.
 
As part of a project inspection team, this position supports a project inspector with the daily activities necessary to ensure compliance with the project plans and specifications.

In response to public or other department inquiries, this position investigates circumstances and resolves technical matters in accordance with established and appropriate criteria or records. Confers with persons requesting service; communicate technical information concerning the application of engineering policies and procedures of interest to community groups, citizens, or city employees.

What are the minimum qualifications? 
  • Must pass the pre-employment background check.
  • Must have an Oregon Driver license and meet the City of Salem's driving standards.
  • Associate degree from an accredited college with major course work in engineering or mathematics, and three years' experience in engineering and drafting, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities as listed, and ability to perform the essential job functions. 
What you will bring along: 
Considerable knowledge of :
  • Elementary principles and practices of civil engineering.
  • Methods employed in land surveying and the use of appropriate survey instruments. 
  • Construction and inspection methods and materials testing techniques. 
Knowledge of:
  • Principles of engineering designing procedures. 
  • Drafting methods and instruments. 
  • Engineering maps and records.
Ability to:
  • Perform precise survey and drafting tasks, to make complex calculations, to reduce field notes, and to prepare drawings and reports for public works and utilities projects.
  • Maintain effective working relations with other employees, contractors, and members of the public.
  • Independently plan and prioritize work for completion. 
  • Effectively provide technical assistance and work direction to subordinate personnel.
  • Use modern office equipment including personal computers.
  • Meet the City's driving standards including maintaining a valid Oregon Class C driver’s license.
  • Maintain required work hours and attendance.

The Engineering Division is responsible for delivering the 5-Year Capital Improvement Plan and is currently working on a wide variety of capital improvement projects including: water treatment and distribution facilities, wastewater collection and treatment facilities, pump stations, reservoirs, drainage facilities, parks, airport facilities, streets, bridges, traffic signals, and urban development projects. The recent Community Improvement Bond includes capital improvement projects for streets, bridges, parks, building renovations, and new building construction, adding $300 million to the current $280 million Capital Improvement Plan and providing at least 10 years of funded infrastructure to be delivered by our team.
