City of Pueblo is Hiring a Seasonal Recreation Specialist - Books in the Park Near Pueblo, CO

This is a non-exempt, temporary, part-time position, limited to 1300 hours annually, under supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and/or Coordinator. The Recreation Specialist is responsible for all participants in a program area and the implementation and leadership of all activities at the site as assigned to include, but not limited to enforcing rules, regulations, and leading staff while engaging and interacting with participants and public to create a fun structured environment. The Recreation Specialist is also responsible for assigned office tasks and assisting in program planning.

  • Direct supervision of all staff at site – includes daily guidance and evaluations
  • Responsible for planning weekly program of activities
  • Appropriate and direct management of all youth and adults
  • Facilitation of activities for all groups
  • Establish a positive rapport with all participants in program
  • Attend all staff meetings and training sessions, including any state-mandated courses
  • Assist with administering staff meetings and training sessions
  • Responsible for maintaining equipment and supplies and tracking inventories
  • Responsible for effectively handling all emergency incidents that occur, using mature sound judgment
  • Ensure adequate communication with staff/supervisor/parents and participants
IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS: 
  • Ensure accurate attendance records are kept current at all times
  • Complete office tasks as assigned by coordinator
  • Responsible for maintaining current records and data on participants and employees
  • Must perform duties and documentation in a timely manner as instructed
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required
  • May perform the duties of similar classifications at an equal or lower pay grade
Physical Standards:
  • Ability to stand, walk, and engage in physical activities for extended periods
  • Must have the ability to lift and move equipment and supplies weighing up to 30 pounds with or without accommodation
  • Adequate vision and hearing to supervise activities and respond to safety concerns
  • Proficient use of hands for handling equipment and maintaining locations
  • Commitment to adhering to safety protocols and wearing appropriate attire and gear
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of an assigned program locations
  • Knowledge of recreation, sports, and youth/teen/adult programming
  • Knowledge of appropriate staff supervision skills
  • Knowledge of group management techniques
  • Ability to oversee, coordinate, and implement programs in assigned area
  • Ability to recommend and implement goals and objectives for providing services
  • Ability to provide lead direction to program participants and staff
  • Ability to evaluate and recommend programs that meet community needs
  • Ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations in assigned program locations
  • Ability to run program if the coordinator is unable to perform tasks
  • Ability to ensure program compliance with mandated City policies, procedures, rules and regulations
  • Ability to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies and organizations
  • The individual must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule which may include mornings, nights, weekdays, weekends, and holidays
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by date of hire
  • Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • At least two years of experience in recreation setting
  • Extensive knowledge in specialized programming >50%
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate preferred
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver's license within 30 days of employment.
    1. License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification.
    2. During employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: 
 
This position involves regular exposure to noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, and extended direct expose to the sun.
Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information. 
This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
